Spoilers ALERT!!

Question: What have you heard about Molly Shannon's stint on Glee? I adore that show and I'm excited about all of its guest stars—except Molly Shannon. It is not just that I think she isn't funny. If that were the case, I would feel neutral about her. I find everything about her (her voice, her facial expressions, her acting) to be downright abrasive and obnoxious. Remember her role on Will & Grace? I know her character was supposed to be irritating, but she took it so far that I was totally unable to enjoy the show. I'm so scared she’ll do that on Glee, and I'll hate her for ruining my favorite show. Can you say anything to assuage my fears?—Amanda

Matt Roush: You should know me well enough by now to know I’m not going to prejudge something like this. Glee is hardly a subtle show, and I’m anticipating Molly Shannon’s arrival with equal measures of anticipation and, yes, dread. Everything about the way her character has been described (alcoholic, pill-popper, badminton coach, nemesis to Sue Sylvester) makes it sound like it’s going to encourage Shannon to go as over the top as possible, which isn’t exactly uncharted territory for this show. Sounds to me like Shannon is one of your personal TV pet peeves, and I get that. We all have them. But she made me laugh quite a lot during her SNL heyday, but also at times there was cringing involved. Same goes for my reaction some weeks to Glee. Love it, but yikes. Hey, if we can still love this show despite that horrible fake-pregnancy storyline, I’m thinking it and we can survive whatever excesses, wretched or otherwise, Shannon is likely to commit.
