Canadian 'Glee' star sticking around!

Nolan Gerard Funk dishes on Thursday’s episode

Gleeks were introduced to Nolan Gerard Funk’s Hunter Clarington (a.k.a. the conniving, cat-petting new head of the Warblers) in last Thursday’s superhero-themed “Dynamic Duets” episode of Glee. Fans will be happy to know that the Canadian actor is here to stay.

“I’m shooting my third [episode] right now and there’ll be more Hunter this season,” Funk tells TV Guide Canada.

The 26-year-old was actually in Canada when he found out the Glee role was his. “I had gotten on a plane to Vancouver to see my family and someone special out there,” he recalls. “And then the next day at like 11 o’clock at night, we’re having dinner and I was in the car and I just got this call that I booked Glee. I had to be back on a plane to literally go from LAX straight to Paramount [Studios] the next day.”

Funk, who admits he auditioned multiple times for the Fox hit, says he’s having a blast on the show.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been on a set where there’s so many different characters shooting at once,” he says. “I was definitely nervous coming into such a tight-knit family. But as soon as I got on set, everyone made me feel really welcome.”

Unlike Hunter, who he describes as “a boss and just a really strong, kind of a different character,” Funk wasn’t involved in any glee clubs or school plays when he was in high school.

“I played a lot of sports growing up and then when I got into acting; it was sort of outside of school because I started working professionally in my early teens,” he reveals. “So, I never really had time to commit. And to be honest, I wasn’t super popular in high school or anything. I don’t know if I would have gotten the roles I deserved.”

Despite not having any prior glee club experience, singing and dancing aren’t new to Funk. He starred alongside Victoria Justice in 2009’s Spectacular!, Nickelodeon’s answer to High School Musical, and nabbed the lead role in the recent Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie. Although Glee is a music-heavy show, Funk says it’s different from his other projects.

“Getting to do a song on Glee, I mean it was really nice to be challenged; having to learn a bunch of choreography and really just finding the vibe of a song that maybe people wouldn’t typically give me to sing,” he says. “That’s one of the interesting things about the show … it’s always going against type and I love that.”

This week’s episode, “Thanksgiving,” will see the McKinley High gang competing at sectionals. Funk promises his character will put up a (vocal) fight.

“This week is sectionals, so Hunter’s main focus in the show is winning. And perhaps world domination as well,” he jokes. “So you’re not going to be seeing my cat that you met in the first episode. But you are going to be seeing some singing and some dancing.”

Funk will sing a duet and is the lead vocal on another track he describes as “a racy song choice.”

“It might even end up being a little controversial, but we’ll see,” he says.

He wouldn’t reveal the song’s name, but he hinted that its hook can be interpreted in many different ways. Judging by the track list that Fox released, it looks like “Whistle,” by Flo Rida is a safe bet.

Next up for Funk is a role alongside Vin Diesel in Riddick and a part opposite Lindsay Lohan in The Canyons, a controversial new indie from Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho) and Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver).

“I play this guy who when you first meet me in the film, I’m very sort of wholesome and then as the film goes on my character just sort of gets dragged through the mud,” he says about his character in the movie. “And shit gets really bad.”

The Canadian actor says he might have more big-screen projects coming up, but in the meantime he’s focusing on Glee. “I feel really lucky and I just hope everybody keeps responding positively to Hunter,” he says.

Glee airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on Global/Fox.

Sadface!

We just hope everything sorts itself out and that this rendition of Kelly Clarkson's killer tune with those sassy Warblers is a one time only occurrence… a mere dalliance we can forgive!

READ SOME TWEETS FROM THE CAST AFTER THE JUMP!

"Glee" at TCAs: Grant Gustin Is Harder and Chris Colfer On...Retiring?

The Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour continues in Pasadena this week and on Sunday night Fox threw a party where the stars of their current and upcoming series made appearances to chat with the press. Of course, AfterElton was there and grabbed some one-on-one time with a cheery Chris Colfer as well as his Glee on-screen nemesis Grant Gustin. Will the villainous Sebastian continue chasing after Blaine (Darren Criss, who was not present due to his Broadway duties on How To Succeed in Business)? And who is singing what in the Michael Jackson tribute episode, currently scheduled to air on January 31st? And why is Colfer talking about retirement? You just know we asked!

First up...Chris Colfer:

AfterElton.com: What's next for Kurt and Blaine?
Chris Colfer:
We haven't been doing much yet since he's been gone. Pretty much the same. They're both in the Michael Jackson episode and they have some sweet moments but other than that we're still hanging out, we're still together.

AE: Any big songs coming up that you're excited about?
CC:
I am singing one song in the Michael Jackson episode, which I'm not sure how I feel about it since it was voted the worst song in history but I think we did it justice. [laughs]

AE: Who voted it worst song?
CC:
The world did, I believe.

AE: What's the song?
CC:
"Ben."

AE: I like that song!
CC:
You do? Oh, good!

AE: What else are you doing outside the show? I'd guess you're getting offers for your hiatus.
CC:
I've got my book, which is coming out in August and the cover art gets released just this month so I'm excited about that. A movie I shot last summer...we're going to have a trailer by the end of this month or next month and we'll get to see a little bit of it. I think I'm doing another movie this summer but I'm not sure. For me, I think I had a coming of Jesus meeting with myself. We had a two-week hiatus for winter break and I realized it was the first week of rest I'd had in three years so I'm going to try to take some time for myself this next hiatus.

AE: Are you going to make sure the breaks happen more often?
CC:
I hope so but we'll see. I'm one of those people that even with the 2 weeks off I had I was like 'I gotta do something! I need something to do." I don't think I could ever retire.

AE: We don't want you to ever retire, Chris.
CC:
Not anytime soon at least.

AE: What's the book? Is it your story?
CC:
God no. I could never write that. That would be so boring. I was approached by many, many people after I won the Golden Globe to do an autobiography and I said 'I'm 20! I'm not going to do an autobiography!' But then I asked the people, 'I really want to do a children's series. Would you be interested in that?' They said absolutely and I got a two-book deal with Little Crown. It's a fantasy series about two kids who go into the fantasy world. I'm very excited about it. The first one comes out in August.

AE: Do you have kids in your life? Relatives or...?
CC:
Not really. just the ones who talk to me in my head. I should probably take my medication.

Later in the party I found the electric-watt smile of Grant Gustin, who appeared to be enjoying the party and attention he was getting from the crowd.

AfterElton.com: Are you enjoying playing Sebastian, who some might call kind of a d**k?
Grant Gustin:
Yes, I would like to say that he is different from myself. It's a lot of fun. People ask me that on Twitter if it's fun being a villain. Darren is jealous of it. We talk about it all the time. He says 'I wish I could be a villain.' He's very different of me.

AE: We'll be seeing more of you soon on the show, right?
GG:
Hopefully. You see more of me in the Michael Jackson episode.

AE: What's happening with Sebastian? Is it the same dynamic in his going after Blaine?
GG:
The dynamic has shifted so Sebastian is not necessarily pursuing Blaine anymore… not necessarily. Not that it's over but in this next episode he's a little bit harsher and he's separating himself from the Kurt/Blaine storyline a little bit. You see him with Santana [and] you see him with other people. It's fun.

AE: But at this point he's still a Warbler?
GG:
Yes.

AE: But as Darren has shown, you can start as a Warbler and end up a regular.
GG:
Who knows? Who knows?

AE: I'm guessing you'd be open to that.
GG:
[big grin] I'm incredibly open to that idea but at the same time the Warblers are so badass. Their numbers are some of the coolest numbers. I was hanging out with a buddy last night watching some of the older Warbler stuff and it's some of the coolest stuff that's been on the show. The Warbler stuff that's about to happen in this [Michael Jackson] episode is really cool.

AE: Can you tell me what your song is on the episode?
GG:
You know, that's the only one that I have not seen leaked yet so I don't know that I'm allowed to say. But it's very...I will say it's a Jackson 5 number. The Warblers are doing a Jackson 5 number and it's a lot of fun.

AE: And you're finished shooting that, right?
GG:
We have finished all the musical numbers I'm involved in. I have one more scene to shoot for this episode.

AE: How has your life changed with so many eyeballs on Glee. Has it changed your life?
GG:
Not as drastically as you would think. I'm not recognized every time I leave my house. I was in Virginia, where I'm from, and there I am recognized but here nothing has really changed. My Twitter life has changed. [laughs] My life has pretty much remained the same and I’m hoping to keep it that way as much as possible

AE: Are you going in for more auditions?
GG:
Initially, when I first landed the role it was 'Let's see if we can get something else and I did.' I did a CSI: Miami episode and that was great. Right now I am settling back down and hoping to do more on the show.

AE: Do you want TV, Broadway...what's in your future?
GG:
Broadway was my initial goal and this has been a happy accident. I am not going to complain about it but this is not part of the chronological order of doing things so right now I’m just taking a step back, appreciating this and figuring out what's next and I have no idea. It's an episode at a time with Glee. I don’t' even know when I'm doing another episode.

AE: Who are you hearing from in terms of the fans?
GG:
First of all on Twitter you can't tell but in person it hasn't been an extreme amount of gay guys. I mean some gay guys have reached out to me and have been like 'I love your character and it's something we haven't seen before on Glee or on television so it's fun to see. I've had gay friends reach out to me so it's been really great."

Grant Gustin Poised to Be Series Regular!

The actor tells THR that he'll be "in and out" for the rest of Season 3 with an offer on the table to become a staple on the Fox hit in Season 4.
What's good news for Glee flirt Grant Gustin may not be great news for fans of the show's Blaine and Kurt.
Gustin, who plays Dalton Academy Warbler Sebastian, tells The Hollywood Reporter that he'll continue to be "in and out" on the current third season of the Fox musical with an offer "on the table" to be a series regular for Season 4.

While Sebastian has appeared in two episodes thus far, he's already set his sights on Darren Criss' Blaine, challenging Kurt (Chris Colfer) for his boyfriend's affections.
Could there be more trouble ahead for the on-screen couple? Not so fast, Gustin says. As of the Michael Jackson tribute episode -- now set for Tuesday, Jan. 31 -- Sebastian will cool his romantic pursuit of former Warbler Blaine.
"As of the Michael Jackson episode, he's slightly separating himself [from Blaine] and is less flirtatious and more of a dick," he says. "He's not necessarily pursuing Blaine anymore. He's not as into it as he has been in the past. Blaine's not giving him anything to work with and he's probably a little bored with it and moves on."
As for what the future holds for his character, Gustin noted that he's "open to the idea" of a Sebastian-Dave Karofsky (Max Adler) pairing. "It'd be fun," he says, adding that he'd also like to follow in Blaine's footsteps and transfer to McKinley High as Criss' character did this season.

"Being a Warbler is totally bad-ass but I wouldn't be surprised if at some point he made the switch [to McKinley] like Blaine did," Gustin says. "As of the Michael Jackson episode, he's still a Warbler."
Are you looking forward to seeing more of Gustin's Sebastian? Would he be a good addition to New Directions? Hit the comments with your thoughts.
Glee returns Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. on Fox.

Glee Villain Gets Series Regular Role in Season Four!

Glee, Darren Criss
Update: A source tells us Grant Gustin's deal is not completely done yet, and "we are not finalizing any season four regulars until May." Grant himself just tweeted: "Thanks for all the congrats but this news is not official as of yet."

Klaine fans, prepare for battle!

We've learned exclusively that Glee has granted a series regular status to one of this season's most controversial recurring characters.

So who's the guy sticking around the Fox hit series next season?

Grant Gustin, who made his Glee debut this season as Warbler Sebastian, has been made a series regular for season four, sources reveal to us exclusively.

We're hearing Gustin will recur throughout the rest of this season and has a real breakout episode with the upcoming Michael Jackson tribute.

Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss) fans may be less than thrilled by the news, but a little bird tells us Sebastian's crush on Blaine lessens in upcoming episodes.

It remains to be seen if Sebastian will be transferring to McKinley High next season. Today, it was announced that a Glee spinoff will not be happening and the graduating seniors will remain on the series.

A Fox rep could not confirm the news.

Glee fans, how do we feel about this casting update? Do you love to hate Sebastian, hate to love him or just hate him? Sound off in the comments!

Telly Leung talks "Glee"!

AE: Let’s talk Glee. The Warblers have been on a few times, but I haven’t seen you yet. You’ve been missed!
Telly Leung:
I miss them, too! What happened was that they had actually called me to do this episode, but I was in the middle of tech and I couldn’t do that. Especially with a show like this where we were still creating and making so many changes on the spot…and literally reading CNN.com and The New York Times to find the jokes that we were going to be using. During that delicate rehearsal/tech process there was no way I could leave my Godspell family to fly to LA to shoot that. As much as I wish I could be in two places at once, I couldn’t, so I had to miss out on that episode.

But it was such a blast seeing my friends on the screen again, and I’d love to return if the opportunity ever arises now that [Godspell] is open.

Worst of 2011

The Warbler's "Uptown Girl" Cover on Glee
Still puzzled? So are we. Nothing against "Uptown Girl," but what purpose did it serve? If it was to introduce Blaine's admirer, Sebastian, why not let him take the lead instead of some random Warbler whose overly animated face made us wonder how he was cast in the first place? Why film it in such a goofy way, with the boys serenading some random lady? Just… why? Maybe it was all to show Blaine he made the right decision in leaving.
