Chris Colfer’s voice is iconic: It’s high and slightly androgynous, and commands your attention. And good thing, because the actor, a fan favorite on Fox’s musical megahit, will soon use those pipes to entertain crowds of Glee obsessives, when the show’s live tour hits Radio City Music Hall Friday 28 through Sunday 30. Colfer, along with cast members like Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Amber Riley, will perform in character (and costume), singing hits from the show, in addition to five new numbers and some skits created exclusively for the tour. (Colfer is most excited to rock Alexander McQueen–esque platforms during the group’s fierce cover of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” and to sing Wicked showstopper “Defying Gravity,” a song he says is meaningful to both him and the fans. “The crowd goes wild,” he gushes.)
The humble 19-year-old admits to battling nerves before performances (“I get shaky,” he confides) and was recently touched when a five-year-old boy hugged him and then burst into tears. But, according to Colfer, the real fun happens behind the scenes—like the time the entire cast held an impromptu Grease sing-along during their private flight from Arizona to NYC (Colfer played Teen Angel, and Riley, who plays Mercedes, took on Rizzo). “We should have a reality show,” he says. “My Life On the Glee List.” Hey, we’d totally watch! We’re self-admitted Gleeks, so we asked Colfer to help us imagine where the New Directions gang would hang out if they spent a day in NYC.
Colfer says: “Kurt would be interning at Vogue. He’d work for Anna Wintour, study everything about fashion and then eventually overthrow her. And of course, he’d be sitting front row at New York Fashion Week.”
TONY recommends Known for giving sartorial advice to Mercedes, Rachel and even Sue Sylvester, this fashion fiend would be doing research at the Museum at FIT’s latest exhibit, “Eco-Fashion: Going Green” (Seventh Ave at 27th St; 212-217-4530, fitnyc.edu; free; through Nov 13). He’d then hit up stylish Fifth Avenue (hello, Prada!) and Billyburg—he’d deem the posh Brooklyn chainlet Bird (203 Grand St between Bedford and Driggs Aves, Williamsburg, Brooklyn; 718-388-1655, shopbird.com) the new Barneys—to snag some dapper duds.
Colfer says: “Rachel Berry would be at the Winter Garden Theatre (1634 Broadway between 50th and 51st Sts) desperately trying to convince them to let her onstage to perform.”
TONY recommends The Broadway-obsessed diva would develop a following of torch-song fanatics after belting out tunes made famous by Liza and Barbra at Marie’s Crisis (59 Grove St between Bleecker St and Seventh Ave South, 212-243-9323), where the crowd regularly engages in musical-theater sing-alongs. (But she’d have to suppress the desire to correct everyone’s pitch.)
Colfer says: “Finn would be sitting in a baseball cap at a New York sporting event, like a Yankees game.”
TONY recommends You’d probably find the jock-turned-singer heartthrob kicking ass and taking names at Dave & Buster’s (234 W 42nd St between Seventh and Eighth Aves; 646-495-2015, daveandbusters.com). His sports skills and competitive nature would come in handy during a mean game of Skee-Ball (and then he’d show off his sensitive side by getting Rachel a teddy bear with his tickets).
Colfer says: “Mercedes, much like Amber, would be at an R&B club, tearing it up.”
TONY recommends The fierce clotheshorse could look for flashy kicks at Alife Rivington Club (158 Rivington St between Clinton and Suffolk Sts, 212-375-8128), or pick up rad sunglasses at Fabulous Fanny’s (335 E 9th St between First and Second Aves, 212-533-0637). She’d then bust a move to the sweet sounds of ’60s soul at Subway Soul Club (The Loft at Public Assembly, 70 North 6th St between Kent and Wythe Aves, Williamsburg, Brooklyn; subwaysoul.com; June 18 at 10pm; $6).
Colfer says: “She’d be shopping for hip maternity clothes—maybe at Topshop—or seeing a top NYC plastic surgeon to get rid of her stretch marks.”
TONY recommends The blond beauty would check out the recently opened Limelight Marketplace (656 Sixth Ave at 20th St; 212-226-7585). She’d rationalize that since it used to be a church (and this mama-to-be has definitely sinned), it would be okay to splurge there on some new wares for her baby (such as a pair of wellies, $60, at the first-ever Hunter store) and a pretty Lilly Pulitzer for LeSportsac bag ($68–$108) for herself.
Colfer says: “He would visit the Statue of Liberty and try to see what’s up her skirt.”
TONY recommends The show’s self-proclaimed badass could pick up a slogan T-shirt or two on Bleecker Street—we can see him rocking one that says I’M AWESOME—before heading to fratty staple Brother Jimmy’s (181 Lexington Ave at 31st St; 212-779-7427, brotherjimmys.com) to nosh on wings ($10–$18), hit on a few Murray Hill cougars and belt out some late-night Journey.
SING YOUR HEART OUT! Glee Live: Radio City Music Hall, 1260 Sixth Ave at 50th St (212-247-4777, thegarden.com). Fri 28 at 8pm; Sat 29, Sun 30 at 3, 8pm; sold out. 100 additional tickets for each show will be on sale Fri 28 at 10am at Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza (17 Irving Pl at 15th St).
