A fundamentalist Christian female is one of the three roles being filled by ‘Glee’s nationwide casting call. The character, says series creator Ryan Murphy, should help balance the show’s sensibilities.
“We’ve taken a couple jabs at the right wing this year, so what I want to do … is have someone who Christian kids and parents can recognize and say, ‘Oh, look—I’m represented there, too!’” Murphy tells TV Guide Magazine. “If we’re trying to form a world of inclusiveness, we’ve got to include that point of view as well.”
When ‘Glee’ first premiered, Quinn Fabray (played by the luminous Dianna Agron) appeared to represent conservatives – being the head of the abstinence club, oft wearing a cross and all. But apparently her teen pregnancy storyline knocked her halo askew.
The new character, says Murphy, will have issues with Kurt’s sexuality as well as New Directions’ sometimes-sensual dance routines, but will not be held up for derision.
The other roles being filled via the casting call are a new beau for Kurt (Chris Colfer) and a male version of Mercedes (Amber Riley).
