Viewers tuning in to tonight's season finale of "Party Down" on Starz will see something quite unusual: Jane Lynch playing an extremely happy character.
Through the first several episodes of last season, Lynch played Constance Carmell, a down-on-her-luck actress (much like the rest of the "Party Down" catering crew), who always saw the bright side of things, possibly to the point of self-delusion. Then, as the season was wrapping up, Lynch left to do a pilot for a little show called "Glee" - playing a very different character - and the rest is TV history.
Now Lynch is back as Constance, who has hired "Party Down" to cater her wedding to a 9-times-divorced, aging, ailing producer. Despite her former co-workers' concern about this marriage, she believes that the power of their love will triumph over all.
Since she's found a way to get out of the catering business, it gets Henry to thinking about going back to acting, and Ron to try to make things work with Danielle, his boss's daughter whom he met at the company picnic.
For anyone thinking that "Party Down" might have abandoned its dark comedy roots in what could end up being the series' final episode, don't worry - there's still plenty of misery to go around as the plot unfolds.
Regardless of what happens with "Party Down," this is not only a wrap-up of Constance's story arc, but it also marks Adam Scott's final episode as a series regular (you'll be able to see more of him on the equally-brilliant "Parks and Recreation" next season), and we get a little hint of what becomes of his character in the final moments. Ryan Hansen will also be in the NBC series "Friends with Benefits," so if the show does return, it will likely be down two regulars, but Scott has already said that he will return for a handful of episodes next season.
This show ends its second season as one of the most consistently funny on television, so I hope somehow it can find its way back on the air next year. "Glee" fans who haven't watched will certainly want to tune in to see a different side of Lynch.
