10 Emmy Awards released its full list of nominees on Friday. Comedy reigns king as programs such as Glee and Modern Family sweep up the nomination list.
The Fox show Glee received 19 nods including nominations for Jewish actors Lea Michele (Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series) and Chris Colfer (Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series). Modern Family trailed behind Glee with 14 nominations.
Aside from Michele and Colfer, several notable Jewish actors and actresses are also Emmy nominees. Julia Louis-Dreyfus of The New Adventures of Old Christine will compete against Michele, while Jon Cryer of Two and a Half Men is also nominated in the same category as Colfer. Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm) is up for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Both David and Louis-Dreyfus have previously snagged Emmys as a writer and a cast member of Seinfeld, respectively.
Two Jewish television hosts are also vying for Emmys. Jon Stewart (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) and Bill Maher (Real Time with Bill Maher) have their programs up for the Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series category. Maher’s program has been nominated in the same category since 2005. The Daily Show, on the other hand, owns the category. It has won the Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series award in the last seven years.
HBO miniseries The Pacific, produced by Steven Spielberg, is nominated for several awards including the top honour in its genre, Outstanding Miniseries.
