SPOILERS ALERT!
Q. What can you tell us about "Grilled Cheesus," the third episode of the new season?
A. You know I haven't seen it yet, you have to tell me what happens because I can't remember. I really thought that was a lovely episode. I thought it was a very well written script and I enjoyed that as well. It didn't push opinions in one direction or another and I did really appreciate the way that they kind of left the subject open for interpretation and didn't cram anything down your throat. I just thought it was a really well written episode again, they never cease to amaze me these writers.
Q. How do you think fans will react to the episode since it revolves around religion?
A. I love that they're like oh yeah, an episode on religion, sure we'll do that. I don't feel like they're afraid to do anything and I just really appreciate it and I feel like so many people want to be safe these days. You don't have to be disrespectful, you can do an episode and talk about a subject and still be respectful of everyone, and I think that they really do that. You can't not have an opinion on that, everyone has an opinion on religion. I was really pleased when I read that episode, I can't wait to see it.
Q. We've noticed some really hilarious pamphlets that your character Emma seems to have lying around in her office. What are some of the funnier ones that you enjoy the most?
A. I laugh so hard at these pamphlets! There are more of them, you don't even see a quarter of the pamphlets that they write up for the show. I think that the pamphlets should have their own segment because they're hilarious. I think one of my favorites is "I Think My Mom May Be Bipolar, Help Me" and then there is something like "Sanitary Wiping, Easy As 1-2-3." I don't know if I am quoting them verbatim but they have so many clever, funny pamphlets in there. I don't know where they come up with them, I have no idea, but somebody is having a really good time. We definitely need an entire segment just on pamphlets.
Q. Gleeks have sort of come up with a lot of unique and fun vocabulary to go along with the show, one of them is Jaymamazing. How do you feel having your name included in the Glee vernacular?
A. That makes me feel very good about myself! That's very good, I like that, whoever came up with that I should take them out to dinner. That's incredibly flattering. Let's get it into the Websters or the English Oxford Dictionary and then I'll be happy. We have to work that in somehow, we gotta get it in there!
Q. There are so many fans of the characters Will and Emma as a couple, where do you see the longevity of their relationship?
A. That's a very good question and a question that I don't really know how to answer just yet. I really feel like the character Dr. Carl Howell, which is the hardest name in the world to say and I always have to say it very slowly, I do feel like he is helping Emma in a way. He is a very spontaneous character, a very lively character, and a character that clearly has no issues with OCD or is not afraid of germs. I do think he's going to push her a bit get over some of those fears that she has, where I see them at is a good thing. Now I also know Emma still has a heart for Will, and will always have a heart for Will, but perhaps it's just that the timing is really off. I don't know how to answer the longevity thing. I think for right now it makes sense that they are together.
Q. You mentioned the changes and spontaneity that Dr. Carl Howell is helping Emma with, do think she's ready to adapt to this?
A. Yeah well see what's so great about the way they write for Emma is that things happen slowly for her, like progressively, slowly but surely. I do think for her I love seeing this arc, I love seeing this change, and I like the fact that it's taking time. I think we know that Emma wants to get better and be okay with germs and to feel like she can have things out of order a little bit. I think naturally it makes sense that it takes some time for that to happen and for that to evolve. I appreciate that they are kind of taking their time with that but pushing it as well.
Q. A lot of people want to see Will and Emma together, with all the drama that occurred last season, it's easy to see why there may need to be a short separation for the two.
A. Yeah, I think so, and I think that's good for Will and Emma. Clearly you want to see those two characters together, I think that you can tell that they are very suited for each other the way that they are written. Because of the drama in the first season and because of his wife and then the separation and the baby and find out it was a fake baby and all of this stuff, Matt's character Will Schuester is going through a lot as well. I actually appreciate the fact that they kind of are allowing us to just be friends for a while, but you can tell that they still have a connection, but I think in any relationship when you go through all of that you need a little time before you jump in head first. I think that they way that they are writing this out is probably really good and really clever and you gotta keep them apart because if they're together than what are we going to root for? These writers are good and they know what they're doing and I trust them and I'm happy.
Q. There are a lot of guest stars that have been teased about, are you excited about Carol Burnett coming on to play Sue's mother?
A. Oh that one I am so excited about, Carol Burnett, I flipped my lid when I heard about her. She was someone that I watched religiously growing up with friends and we'd watch that show every single night. It was so funny when I found out, I found out on IMDB.com. They had this space on the front page of IMDB and it said Glee, and it had her name and face, or coming onto Glee or something like that. I had my husband take a photo of myself holding my computer with Carol Burnett's face on the homepage, that's how crazy I am about her. I am so excited, I have to meet her, I have to meet her!
Q. We recently interviewed Dot Marie Jones who plays Coach Beiste and she also expressed her excitement at Carol guest starring on the show too. Have you gotten to know Dot at all?
A. Dot was in our first episode back, and I actually just met her last week, it was the first time we ran into each other on set. I love her so much, I'm such a big fan. She's so wonderful and you can't not love that woman, I think she's brilliant.
Q. Are there any specific people you'd like to see guest star on the show?
A. I think they're doing pretty good, I don't think they need any advice from anyone, I think they're doing okay on their own. There are so many women that I loved growing up, I loved Shelly Long and Goldie Hawn. It's those comediennes that I always think of when people ask me who I want to see come on so I think I've said their names to death. If it was a musical star, I think it would be unbelievable if we got someone like Cher. I think we need a Cher episode, and I think we need Cher, that would be the end all, be all.
Q. Last season "Glee" won the TV Land "Future Classics" award, what do you think the legacy of the show will be?
A. Gosh I don't know. First of all I think the awards and nominations and things I have to say have been so wonderful and overwhelming and so unexpected. That's not to say that I don't think that the writing and all of that isn't worthy of that, but I just think we've filmed for so long before anything aired, it was just such a shock when we finally aired cuz we felt like we were getting such a lovely response from everyone. The legacy of the show, I don't know, I think the fact that it's a musical comedy is quite a big thing. I hope that we're remembered for, and this is more for the writers, but a show that's interesting and comical but still kind of touched on real issues and issues that were interesting to people and also that maybe we're a cast of unique, interesting people. We're all unique and different, and that's okay, and maybe that's what makes us special and if people can kind of relate to that in some way I think that's a wonderful way to remember our show. I don't know, it's hard to think of a legacy for a show you've only been on really for a year. It's kind of an unfathomable thought at this moment. Maybe if we're still on in a few years maybe you should ask me that one again.
Q. You and Matthew Morrison certainly have wonderful chemistry together, did that come naturally?
A. I feel like we're good friends and that's always helpful that we get along. We're friends, I think that is definitely helpful. Matt and I actually worked together, we did a pilot together probably two years before we did "Glee," so we already knew each other from that and played love interests on that as well. We get along quite nicely and we're friends and I think that must be helpful when we're working together. It definitely feels helpful to me so I am glad that people are feeling that when they're watching us together that we seem to get along.
Q. Rumor has it that Emma might be getting a little messy in the upcoming Rocky Horror Picture show episode, is there anything that you can tease for us?
A. She might get a little bit dirty, she might be getting dirty. I want to be careful I don't know how much they're trying not to give away for that show. She's definitely a part of that show and there is definitely some experiences for her in that show.
Q. The songs from the show are heating up the iTunes and CD sale charts. Are you listening to the CDs or buying the iTunes songs?
A. They are so lovely that they send us all of the albums directly to our house so I have them all already. I listen to them from time to time, it's funny I think when you're a part of something sometimes you want to take a little bit of step away from it, even though I'm a big fan of the show and I watch every single episode and I'm a big fan of everyone on the show. I have all of the albums and I definitely always keep all of the albums and I get excited when the albums come out.
Q. "Glee" has such an amazing following through social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, are you aware of any of this?
A. You know it's funny I have never had an account on Myspace or Facebook or Twitter or any of that stuff. That's a whole other world to me and I know that is such a big part of everyone's life. These days I definitely feel like I am somewhat removed from that because I am not in that world at all. I know it's a big thing now for television and bands and all the rest of it. It's kind of how you can cultivate a following and it's a great way to get the word out about what's going on. I'm so uninvolved with that but it's hard for me to have any opinion on that stuff.
Q. The show has received such an incredible response from viewers all around the world, has this surprised you?
A. Definitely again it was a wonderful surprise to see how the show resonated here and I think to see that it's doing well in so many other countries it's definitely astonishing. It's great to feel like we struck a chord somehow, but I think whenever you're on a show that is successful it's a shock. You never know, you never know how people are going to respond, and when they respond in such a wonderful warm and positive way you can't not be shocked by that a little bit.
Q. Are there any subjects that the show hasn't tackled yet that you'd like to see addressed?
A. Gosh I feel like we've done so much already and we're only on the sixth episode of the second season. I don't know, I think stuff like that is very tricky and I think what makes Ryan so good and Ian and Brad so good about knowing what to do is that I think they really understand what people want to see and they kind of have a pulse on what to talk about. I also feel they do it in such a way that's not preaching and I feel like they know how to discuss things in such a non preaching way and subjects that aren't going to push it maybe too far, if that makes sense. I don't know, I am so not a writer and I will never proclaim to be, I just can only say that I leave all of this into their six hands, six of the best writing hands in town. They have a great understanding of that and what should be tackled and what shouldn't be tackled and I wouldn't have that same knowledge or understanding of what would be good to do. My brain doesn't work that way, that's all them, I would never dare to give them a suggestion, they are always a hundred steps ahead.
Q. What do you think about the evolving dynamic personality the writers give Emma?
A. My favorite thing about what they write for her is that they make her such a well rounded character. I love the fact that she does have issues like everybody in the world, we all have something that makes us different and we all have things that we're dealing with. It just so happens for her it's OCD and being germaphobic and all of the rest of it. I also love that amidst all of that she has such a big heart and she also has these moments of such wonderful clarity. I just love that we can kind of see all of that, it makes her a full person and it makes her a well rounded person and we can see all of that. I love the fact that they are now starting to kind of make her a little more stronger and more confident and that's even making that circle even more well rounded. I love that about these writers and I think that they are so good at that for all of the characters. I am really thankful that they've really worked to make Emma a very well rounded person. For an actor that is just very, very fulfilling.
Q. What can you tell us about the upcoming scene in which you play opposite Jane Lynch's character Sue in the "Grilled Cheesus" episode?
A. They actually gave me some wonderful stuff in "Grilled Cheesus." First and foremost I think Jane Lynch is just one of the most amazing actors out there. Any time I can have a scene with her I just get so excited the second that I wake up that day. In that particular scene I felt like it was such a gift to kind of have that moment with her. We've really only seen that really soft side a couple of times with her sister, it's kind of an explanation of why Sue is the way she is, but particularly on this issue it felt like a really great gift to be able to have that emotional moment with her. I felt really blessed to be able to have that scene and also have those scenes with Kurt. Chris is another amazing actor and he's not even twenty yet. I felt like they gave Emma some really wonderful heartbreaking scenes to be a part of and I was really, really thankful for that. It's great to have the funny and the dramatic and I feel like they are so nice to let me be a part of both. I think it was just a really nice moment for the two, Emma and Sue, to have together.
Q. Patrick Gallagher who played Coach Tanaka was so wonderful in season one and a lot of Gleeks miss him, are you missing him as well? After all, you did have that memorable scene in season one featuring "The Thong Song" and Ken did wear those famous short shorts.
A. I know everyone misses the Tanaka! I miss the Tanaka too but they weren't the right match for each other (Emma and Ken). I loved watching him (Patrick), I think he's so wonderful to watch. That explains a lot about Tanaka that song, that he would pick that for his wedding dance. The polyester short shorts! Always polyester shorts and he always had a fanny pack. It's a very good look, I don't know why it hasn't been brought back yet.
Q. What would you like to say to all of your fans and supporters?
A. I would love to say first of all any fans that I have ever met of the show have been the coolest people in the world. The true Gleeks are just ridiculously cool and lovely and I love it when they come up and say hello. I would just love to say thank you for the support and I'm a Gleek too and Gleeks unite!
