Upcoming guest star interviewed!

Carol Burnett still loves taking questions from the audience. And her fans love asking.

Burnett, 77, ranks among the greatest comediennes in the history of television. Her work on “The Garry Moore Show” (1959-62) and her own variety hour, “The Carol Burnett Show” (1966-78), earned her not only multiple Emmys but also huge popularity. Next Sunday, she will appear at the Holland Center for Performing Arts for an evening of “Laughter and Reflection With Carol Burnett.”

Like the opening segment of her TV show, the audience will ask Burnett questions, spurring an impromptu conversation. We had a few questions of our own for Burnett, including some about her new role on the hit TV show “Glee.” She chatted with us by phone from her living room in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Q. You’ve never stopped working. We hear you’re going to play Jane Lynch’s mother on “Glee” in November. Is that a recurring role?

A. I don’t know. I may do one or two. They’ll decide if it’s worth it. I’ve worked with Jane (who plays cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester) and with Matthew Morrison (glee club director Will Schuester) before. It’s nice to get in the sandbox and play with them.

Q. How did the part come to you?

A. I talked to my agent. He asked, “What interests you?” I said I didn’t want to do a regular weekly show again. We had the best, and it can’t be that way again for me. Last year, before “Glee” took off, I said I’d love to do it. I think it’s very clever and there’s a lot of musical comedy, which I adore. The characters are so funny, and it has a story line, not just kids bursting into song. My agent called them, and they said yes. They’re asking now about what song I want to sing. (She and Sylvester will duet on “Ohio” from the musical “Wonderful Town.” The show is set in Lima, Ohio.)
