Chris Colfer talks about Brittana's future and working with Jane Lynch

Want the inside scoop on what’s in store for Glee’s Brittany (Heather Morris) and Santana (Naya Rivera)?

Yeah, me too. That’s why I couldn’t resist asking Chris Colfer, who plays Kurt, about our favorite Cheerios when I interviewed him for our brother site, AfterElton.com.

Unfortunately, he swears that none of the actors has any idea what’s in store for their characters. He doesn’t even know if Kurt and Blaine (Darren Criss) are going to be BFs or BFFs, let alone whether Brittany and Santana are going to take their relationship beyond its current decidedly unsettled state.

Which doesn’t mean he doesn’t have an opinion about it. “I know (AfterEllen.com readers) want to hear about Brittany and Santana,” he told me. “I think the Brittany/Santana storyline is a lot of what helps make Glee still a musical comedy. It’s pretty funny that these two high school girls constantly make references that they are a couple, and who knows what they are really thinking when they do it?”

What Colfer really likes, he said, is the way the Brittany/Santana and Kurt/Blaine storylines turn gender stereotypes inside out. “I think Blaine and Kurt’s relationship is there for the uplifting, inspirational message,” he said, “and then there are the girls for the comic relief. And it’s really very funny, because it’s usually the other way around.

“The other way the genders are reversed, and it’s interesting, is that usually it’s the guys who are much more promiscuous.” He contrasted that with the “tease of a relationship” between Kurt and Blaine, who haven’t even kissed yet. “Maybe Brittany and Santana are just so sexual they don’t know how to have a relationship with anyone that isn’t sexual,” he said.

Bottom line, though? Colfer swears no one knows where it will all end up — and that might include show creator Ryan Murphy. “I actually saw [him] last night, and I asked him [about Kurt and Blaine’s future], and he wouldn’t tell me,” he said. “Which makes me think that he doesn’t even really know, so we’ll see. I think they’re kind of milking it for what it’s worth, and then seeing where it goes.”

He also said that favorite real-life lesbian Jane Lynch is the hardest person for him to work with in the cast, but not because they don’t get along. No, it’s an entirely different problem.

“Jane Lynch is challenging to work with because she’s so funny,” he said. “It’s a miracle every time I get through a line. We have so many outtakes of me and Jane, and we are just cracking up because she’s so hysterical.”
