New York, N.Y. – In 2010, the phenomenon got bigger, better, and gayer than ever!
Chart-topping albums. A sold-out tour. Nearly 13 million viewers weekly. Nineteen Emmy nominations. Endless magazine covers. Glee, admits co-creator Ryan Murphy, “is huge. The thing that is crazy for me is the appetite for it internationally has become big as well.” So much so that the cast will stage its blockbuster tour next summer in London, Manchester, and Dublin. To help celebrate the Year of the Gleek (a.k.a. 2010), EW asked Murphy for his highlights from the past year.
EW: What’s your favorite episode this year?
Ryan Murphy: I really loved doing the Madonna episode. I thought that was a game changer for us because I think it brought a lot of viewers who were her fans to the show, and it was an honor to pay tribute to her. Also the one that had “Teenage Dream.” That might be one of my favorite songs we’ve ever done. [The track became Glee’s most downloaded single ever.]

EW: Do you have a favorite guest star?
Murphy: Well, I loved all of them. For me personally, because I directed it, it’s Gwyneth Paltrow. It was fun for me to make her do those things.

EW: What’s it been like watching your cast become celebrities?
Murphy: I can remember when I first met with Lea [Michele]. She had just moved to L.A., and she was sort of bemoaning the lack of opportunities. She’s not the typical blond, Blake Lively kind of actress. So the fact that she was not only discovered but embraced was awesome. I feel the same way about Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer. I’m very proud of what they’ve done.

EW: What’s the most ridiculous Glee rumor you’ve heard this year?
Murphy: My favorite thing now is that celebrities Twitter that they’re appearing on the show, completely making it up to launch discussions. I won’t name who, but it’s happened a couple of times.

Glee: The Real Warblers
The members of The Beelzebubs, Tufts University’s oldest all-male a cappella group, have their hands full this semester. Along with recording a new album and performing on campus in Medford, Mass., the group landed the high-profile gig of providing the arrangements and background vocals for Glee‘s newest music group, the Dalton Academy Warblers. After the success of “Teenage Dream” (with Darren Criss on lead vocals) earlier this month, the musical stylings of The Beelzebubs returned this week as Blaine and the Warblers performed Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” in New Directions’ Sectionals showdown. The Beelzebubs spoke with EW about lending their voices to a hit television show, their admiration for Criss, and why they won’t be pursuing careers in music.
