Lea Michele hopes to stay in school despite advancing years

WARNING: SPOILERS!
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Everyone eventually grows out of their parts, save for cartoon characters. But the problem can be particularly acute when you're playing a high schooler who's already well past graduation age.

Still, Fox's Glee would be hard-pressed to get along without its go-to songstress -- Lea Michele in the role of Rachel Berry. In a recent interview, though, the show's maestro, Ryan Murphy, said he's intent on trimming the herd and adding new faces when charter members of Glee get too old to be believable in their roles.

Michele, 24, was asked about this after a panel this week titled "The Funny Women of Twentieth Century Fox TV." She took it very well before going immediately to her defense.

"I feel like I am looking younger every day. Don't you guys agree?" Michele asked, laughing. "For me, I'm fortunate that I look young. And as long as the viewers are believing it, then I'll fake it."

Michele, again nominated for a Golden Globe, has grown accustomed to walking awards show red carpets, which she'll do again this Sunday.

"Playing Rachel Berry has made me feel more beautiful than I've ever felt in my whole life," she said. "And I go on that red carpet knowing that true beauty comes from inside. So I don't care if people like my fashion style or not."

Glee will be getting the coveted post-Super Bowl slot on Feb. 6th when Fox telecasts the NFL's annual crown jewel from Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Michele isn't allowed to spill many details, but describes it as "a very basic episode of Glee that has some grand moments." In other words, the budget is bigger, befitting the grander stage.

She remains obsessed with Funny Girl, but has yet to be asked to play its heroine, Fanny Brice.

"Where are these calls?" she wondered. "Fanny Brice is me."

She hasn't met Barbra Streisand, who took Brice to the bank on the big-screen. "And I'm OK with that," Michele said. "You're got to keep your idols your idols."

During the preceding panel, Michele said she grew up admiring and being inspired by the late Gilda Radner, a plain-faced mainstay during the early years of Saturday Night Live.

"I didn't feel like there was anybody on television that looked like me or as gawky like me," she said. "Nowadays, all these shows are just breaking the rules and showing that you can be beautiful and be funny, too."

Michele had been in four Broadway shows before Glee. It's a grind, she said, with every episode "literally like creating and entire new musical."

On a recent "Fraturday" at 4 a.m. (Friday had spilled into Saturday), she found herself "on a football field dressed like a zombie looking like Bette Midler in Hocus Pocus running around singing Thriller in Long Beach. I was very tired. But at the end of the day it's like 'Oh my God, Who gets to do this kind of stuff? As tired as we are, it's so worth it."

She'll likely feel that way as a 25- or 26-year-old, too. And if Glee will keep her in high school, Michele will gladly take it.
