It's 2pm on a Saturday and somehow Harry Shum, Jr had decided to add an interview and photo shoot to his already hectic schedule. There are times when the "Glee" star's schedule can run for 14 hours during shoot days, so we at Breakout Magazine are thrilled that he's decided to spend the day with us.
In a short time period, Harry has managed to turn a career of dance into the multi-faceted business of "Harry". He's done Ipod commercials, Gap commercials, starred in movies like Step Up 3D and then unknowingly charmed his way, from what was originally billed as a day player, into a series regular on a new show called GLEE.
Our photo shoot was formal but our interview was the opposite. I wanted to try to think of questions that maybe he hadn't answered before. Here are some snippetts from the interview, watch the video for the full interview.
What does a young Harry get into?
Young Harry used to collect bugs and put them into weird containers and then release them into different places... I don't know why I just said that, did I say that out loud?
You did say that out loud.
Umm, young Harry... I was a shy kid when I was younger. I didn't really get into acting or dance. I didn't dance when I was younger. Literally, I would jump around in my room, I don't really consider that dancing as more than just a little kid having fun...but yeah, I was a shy kid until Jr. High when I was able to go into a drama class, that's when I really got to come out of my shell and perform.
So you didn't dance when you were younger, what age did you start dancing?
Ummm, high school, I didn't start dancing till high school and really actually going in and learning choreography and actually seeing all these different styles of dance. I didn't even know what ballet was until high school, and even, like a turn, I used to call it a spin. But yeah, that's when I started learning about technique and just what it really meant to me and how much fun I had doing it.
Now are you a trained dancer?, Did you start training? You mentioned Ballet, do you do Ballet?
No I don't, I wish I did, but I'm learning little things here and there and you kind of learn from the streets, Hip Hop was the first thing I learned. Definitely, I had like two friends that used to Pop and do breakdancing and wasn't very good at it, you just kind of learn and if you're by them all the time and you're seeing them do this, you kind of start getting in front of the mirror yourself whether it be in your own bedroom trying to mimic what they are doing.
Who are your dance influences? You didn't dance growing up but obviously you saw somebody.
Obviously every body watches Michael Jackson and you can't help but appreciate what he does, whether you a fan of dance or not and I loved watching him. I think that's what made me want to get into dance, cause I wanted to do that. You saw that as a kid but you're too afraid or people tell you, "Oh! you'll never do that", or even when I start to get into it and you realize Michael Jackson and what his influences were, Gene Kelley, Fred Astaire, Bob Fossey, and what he took from them... you can see it in alot of his videos and performances.
So you somehow parlayed your dancing into the biggest television show that there has been in a long time. How?
I didn't know anything about the show, and it came to a point where you get an audition and you go for it. You just want a job. You're looking for a job whether it be as an actor or dancer, you're just trying to pay your bills. I went to this audition as a day player, where it was only supposed to be for one day. It's weird cause we had character names and I had no idea what we were gonna do after that day and it turned out...Hey! you should come to rehearsal...You NEED to come to rehearsal and I was like ok, and then I'm meeting all the cast members and then literally it just turned into, we're gonna need you for the next 9 weeks and then it turned into almost 2 years right now.
Is Glee your dream job?
I have a lot of dream jobs and this is probably one of them just for the fact that it's television there's never any opportunities, especially on this scale, to showcase all those....to dance, sing & act you don't have that, so it's a great vehicle to be a part of.
What would you like your character to do on Glee? Is there any specific scene or direction you'd like to see you character go in?
Yea, I really trust the writers...where they take their story lines. I would love to see the home life and what's the backstory of Mike Chang, he's still a mysterious character, obviously we know he loves to perform, he loves to dance and he has an interesting relationship with Tina.
Yea at Asian Camp. Does that exist?
I think they saw like two places that had it. We searched it on google so I think it's real in some places but I think it's more of... I don't even know...I saw it and I saw pictures of it and there is an Asian Camp so I'm curious to see what it actually is.
I usually end all of my interviews with this question. What is your biggest fear?
My biggest fear, I'ma have to think about that one.... It's not waking up, I think that why I like working so much and filling the days and making everything count in that day to get everything out that I want and that's one of those fears that I have and especially with how my career is going it has been nice to like, have all these days to fill and entertain people. Another one is making sure people are entertained at all times, I love that feeling, it's why I got into this business, the joy of making people laugh, making people cry or just feel happy inside.
