Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy appears to have changed his tune with regards to Kings Of Leon—i.e. the band that said no to their hit “Use Somebody” being used on Fox’s award-winning show choir dramedy—since his scathing interview with the Hollywood Reporter back in January. At that time, Murphy vented, “F*** you, Kings of Leon. They’re self-centered assholes, and they missed the big picture. They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument.” Read what he has to say about the band now in a new interview with the Reporter below.
“I didn’t speak with as much clarity as I would have liked,” Murphy told the Hollywood Reporter while on the set of Glee Friday afternoon. “Who am I to say ‘F*** you?’ That’s not what I meant. I completely understand when artists don’t want a show or another artist to interpret their songs. In fact, I respect it. It’s their personal work and I’d feel the same way. We get turned down all the time and I’ve don’t fight it or even go back after a rejection.”
Murphy mentioned to the publication that Bjork recently turned him down after a request to use one of her songs was issued—which he says was fine with.
“She read the scene and didn’t think it was the right fit for her song,” he said. “I told her, ‘That’s completely cool,’ and she said to come back to her down the road. We deal with that every day.” Meanwhile, a Bjork song on Glee? Guess it couldn’t be any trippier than when the cast did Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll” on the Super Bowl episode.
The Reporter goes on to mention that Glee guest star Gwyneth Paltrow apparently mediated a truce between Kings Of Leon and Murphy. “We’ve been trading texts and emails and I support them,” the TV exec said. He added that he’s now learned a lesson: “Don’t say f*** you to someone in the press.”
That’s nice. But we still won’t hold our breath waiting to hear “Use Somebody” on Glee.
