'Glee' Star Matthew Morrison Responds To 'Puddle Of HIV' Comments
Tags article, general, matthew morrisonLast week, novelist Bret Easton Ellis made headlines when he posted some disparaging comments about "Glee" on Twitter. The "Rules of Attraction" author wrote, "I like the idea of Glee but why is it that every time I watch an episode I feel like I've stepped into a puddle of HIV?"
He soon followed up his comments by tweeting, "No, I wasn't drunk last night. I was watching Chris Colfer singing, um, 'Le Jazz Hot' and felt like I had suddenly come down with the hivs." The writer added a few days later, "Okay, okay, I get it, I get it. I'll stop riffing on H.I.Glee and tweet about how boring the collected stories of [Irish author/playwright] William Trevor are. Happy?"
Ellis' comments quickly lit up the Internet, and a source close to "Glee" told E! News at the time that those associated with the show felt his remarks were "disgusting."
Well, now "Glee" star Matthew Morrison has responded to Ellis' rants. "Who's that?" the actor joked to E! News when asked about the writer's Twitter posts on Friday while attending a Los Angeles charity event.
"You know what? That means the show is good if people have not-nice things to say — and amazing things to say. It keeps people talking, you know? That's going to be a part of the show."
Ellis is the latest celebrity to direct some trash talk at the hit Fox musical comedy. In the past, the Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon and Slash have all been critical of the program's creator, Ryan Murphy, for not being completely understanding when they chose to not give "Glee" permission to use their music. (Murphy has yet to comment on Ellis' tweets about the show.)
However, earlier this month, Murphy extended an olive branch to those bands. "I didn't speak with as much clarity as I would have liked," he explained to The Hollywood Reporter. "I completely understand when artists don't want a show or another artist to interpret their songs. In fact, I respect it. It's their personal work and I'd feel the same way. We get turned down all the time and [I] don't fight it or even go back after a rejection."
While Ellis is starting fires, Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill apparently is trying to put some out in the wake of Murphy's positive sentiments. "I'm glad [Murphy] said something," Followill told RollingStone.com over the weekend. "We don't hold grudges. I'll just be glad when I can check my Google alerts and don't have to read anything about us and 'Glee.' That'll be a wonderful feeling."
