Glee Tour 2011 - Anaheim, CA Honda Center - May 27, 2011

MORE PICS AFTER THE JUMP!

Glee Live! at the Honda Center

Before the show, the Cheerios (cheerleaders who torment the Glee club) passed out barf bags to random members of the audience as Coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) informed everyone that the show they were about to see was “terrible” and that the barf bags could come in handy. However, as per usual, Coach Sylvester was wrong.

Adorned in red and white, the fans went wild as the New Directions (Glee club) performed various songs from the show’s two seasons.

Kicking off with the group’s anthem, “Don’t Stop Believing,” Finn (Cory Monteith) and Rachel (Lea Michele) commanded the audience’s attention and welcomed everyone to the show. The cast wore red shirts with white vests to represent McKinley High’s school colors.

Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) and Mercedes (Amber Riley) gracefully opened Florence and the Machine’s “Dog Days are Over.” Together, the two created a beautiful harmony, which prompted the Glee club to dance around the stage and wave toward members of the audience.

The group then performed “Sing” by My Chemical Romance, who was joked about earlier on in season two by Coach Sylvester. As the group belted the lyrics, a flashing sign reading “sing” was bright on stage and encouraged the crowd to sing along.

Will Schuester, the Glee club’s director, showed up on the screen as if to push the New Directions to give the performance all they had so they could beat the other show choirs. Brittany (Heather Morris) then appeared on stage alone to tell Schuester that she was nervous, to which he responded, “Just think of your idol.” With that, Brittany’s trench coat was torn off as she revealed a green bikini top and skirt, similar to the clothing Britney Spears wore in her “I’m a Slave 4 U” video. Possibly one of the sexiest parts of the night, Brittany danced on stage as she sang the song, almost too similarly to Spears herself.

As Mike (Harry Shum, Jr.) and Sam (Chord Overstreet) sang the opening lines to Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls,” Puck (Mark Salling) suddenly appeared on a stage in the middle of the crowd. Girls seem to awe the bad boy as he strummed his guitar ― until he was taken away by Lauren (Ashley Fink), who appeared in the middle of a venue aisle by shrieking fans and commanded, “Get over here, Puckerman.” Puck then chased her through the audience and finally onto the main stage.

The show took a softer turn as Kurt (Chris Colfer) ― who was celebrating his 21st birthday ― sang the Beatles’ “Hold Your Hand.”

Mercedes emerged onto the center-crowd stage and belted out Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way.” Her voice seemed to captivate the crowd, ranging from high belts to low notes, indicating that she truly is one of the best vocalists on the show.

Artie (Kevin McHale) paid homage to the king of pop, Michael Jackson. Dressed in a red leather jacket with backup dancers in gold jackets, Artie performed “PYT,” which was an easy crowd favorite as many danced and sang along.

Of course, no Glee show would be complete without a Lady Gaga number. After all, the show has already dedicated two episodes to her. The stage flashed hues of blue and purple as a dance beat played. Suddenly, the cast appeared in their “Born This Way” shirts, which have embraced flaws written on them. Dressed in his “likes boys” shirt, Kurt opened “Born This Way” by telling the crowd, “It doesn’t matter if you love him or capital H.I.M.” The entire audience seemed to dance to Gaga’s Madonna-inspired hit, and backup dancers shot out “Born This Way” T-shirts toward the crowd.

Rachel then broke out into Katy Perry’s hit, “Firework,” which was complemented by realistic-looking fireworks on stage.

Another competing group, yet crowd favorite, The Warblers, took over the center-crowd stage. Opening up with Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” and dressed in their recognizable navy blue and red Dalton Academy suits, the group seemed to make all of the females swoon over them as they performed mostly a capella in harmony. They continued with Wings’ “Silly Love Songs” as they made their way toward the front stage and ended their set with Pink’s “Raise Your Glass.”

The New Directions then performed some duets from the show’s second season. Kurt and Rachel performed Barbara Streisand’s “Happy Days are Here Again at the center-crowd stage, which was followed by Sam and Quinn (Dianna Agron) performing “Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat. The duets segment was ended with Mercedes’ and Santata’s (Naya Rivera) rendition of “River Deep Mountain High” by Ike and Tina Turner.

The music stopped for a bit as Brittany appeared on stage to profess her love to Blaine (Darren Criss), the leader of The Warblers ― and boyfriend to Kurt.

“Brittany!” Are you flirting with my man?” Kurt accused. “It’s okay. It’s your birthday,” Brittany replied. With that, she left the stage and Kurt invited Blaine to join the New Directions for a few numbers.

“So, Blaine, since we are in Anaheim, I have a proposal for you. Blaine Warbler, will you join Glee club?” Kurt asked as he playfully tumbled across stage to get to his lover. Blaine replied that he had always wanted to do a Broadway number, to which Kurt responded belonged to himself and Rachel, who appeared on the center-crowd stage to belt out “Rain On My Parade” from the 1964 musical, “Funny Girl.”

Finn then emerged on the main stage to perform Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl,” from season one, which was followed by Santana’s rendition of “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse. The rest of the group then appeared to perform their first original song, “Loser Like Me,” which was followed by the group releasing confetti into the audience from mock slushie cups.

The encore included Beyonce’s iconic “Single Ladies” dance, performed by Kurt; a “Glee unplugged” rendition of Rebecca Black’s “Friday”; and Men Without Hats’ “Safety Dance” by Artie. The group then rejoined on stage for Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige’s “Empire State of Mind” and Queen’s “Somebody to Love.”

Overall, the night seemed to be Utopia-like for Orange County Gleeks. The Glee Live tour continues tonight in Los Angeles at the Staples Center and tomorrow at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego. For tickets and more tour information, visit gleetour.com.
