McKinley High is out of session for the summer, but that doesn’t mean that its world-famous students and faculty are taking the season off. Not by a long shot. Many of them are currently crisscrossing the country on the Glee Live Tour, an in-person iTunes Greatest Hits download we were fortunate enough to attend at Radio City Music Hall last June (and may re-up on in a few weeks). But they’re also very busy with exactly the kind of career-growing side projects one would expect of a group of young (and not-so-young) people whose presence on the series is necessarily limited to the length of a teenager’s stay in high school. We caught up with five of our favorite Glees and grilled them about their upcoming endeavors, their summer jams, and how much of their tan-lines their bathing suits cover.
Brett Berk: What have you got planned for the hiatus?
Max Adler: Right now I’m in Michigan filming a movie called Detention of the Dead, which is like Zombieland meets Breakfast Club. Then me and my family are going down to Mexico for Father’s Day. When I get back from that, I’m doing a SAG screening and Q&A o

f an episode from Glee, because they just found out that I’ve been submitted for an Emmy for best guest actor. So that’s very exciting.
At the end of July, there’s a big Glee convention in Birmingham, England, so me, Jenna Uskowitz, Harry Shum, Kevin McHale, and Ashley Fink are going to do a big autograph-and-picture session with all the amazing U.K. fans that we don’t usually get to meet. I’ve never been to Europe, so from London, my girlfriend and I are going to head to France and spend that next week or so in Paris. Then Glee starts up again in August.
In between all that, I’m going to try to get another movie. I just met with a director for a movie called AWOL, and I’m in talks for a movie called The Gangster Squad, with Ryan Gosling and Sean Penn.
Jesus Christ, Max. That’s a lot. You must need to relax. If you could pick a drink that best describes you this summer, what would it be?
For Glee purposes, if you’re talking about my character, I’d go with a virgin daiquiri.
What about a kick-back theme song for your summer?
“Red Red Wine,” by UB-40. It’s the ultimate chill-out summer song. It’s on in the background right now, and it’s my ringtone, my alarm, the whole thing.
Ashley Fink
Besides the tour, what have you got planned for this hiatus?
Ashley Fink: I’m really looking forward to unpacking. I moved three months ago, and I’m still in boxes. So my summer plan is to hang photos and buy window treatments. Isn’t that glamorous? But besides that, there’s nothing I have locked down. There’s some live theater that might be coming up—I may possibly be doing something on Broadway. Possibly. But I can’t say more about that. Also, recently Donnie Walberg has expressed interest in possibly wanting to marry me, on Twitter. So it’s possible I’ll be planning a wedding.
Let me know if you need any bridesmaids. You can pair me with Marky Mark for the slow dance. What’s the one thing you'd really want to do this summer, if only you had the time?
I’d want to go on a gay cruise. No, really. I got offered to M.C. a gay cruise that goes all across Europe. Kathy Griffin did last year, and this year they asked me, and I would love to follow in those footsteps. If I could, I would definitely hop aboard with all my gays, and just live.
What alcoholic drink best describes you this summer?
Vodka RedBull, because mama needs energy like nobody’s business. Or a red wine at 10 o’clock at night. One glass: full, bold, and smoky.
If you could pick a theme song for your summer, what would it be?
“Time of My Life,” from Dirty Dancing. Because—well, it sounds so cheesy—but I’m having the time of my life. I’ve never even been out of the country, and I’m about to perform in front of 30,000 people in Ireland. If that’s not the time of my life, what is?
Josh Sussman
What have you got planned this summer?
Josh Sussman: I’m currently doing voice work on the Disney animated show Fish Hooks. I’m planning to do 100 push-ups a day to make my body super-strong, because I want to be able to go to the beach and water parks with confidence. I’m also excited to go home to New Jersey and attend my cousin’s Sweet 16. And I plan on spending the remainder of the summer looking for a Frisbee partner, because playing alone gets really tiring.
What’s the one thing you’d do this summer, if only you had the time?
I wish I could go to Disneyland all the time. They have a lot of new attractions opening that I’m excited about. I also wish I had time to travel internationally and see the world.
What alcoholic drink best describes you this summer?
Cough syrup. I usually get sick in the summer.
A bit sweet, but delicious with vodka, if I may offer a suggestion. If you could vacation with any celebrity this summer, whom would you pick, and where would you go?
I would love, love, love to vacation with the Muppets. I’m such a big fan and I’m so excited they are making a comeback. We would have to vacation somewhere dry, though, because in a moist environment, I would hate to be responsible for any Muppet mildew scenario.
Iqbal Theba
What have you got planned for this summer?
Iqbal Theba: There is lots going on with me right now. I am in Transformers 3 and it is coming out in July. I just finished doing the movie Playing the Field, with Gerard Butler and Uma Thurman. I am also in the process of giving final touches to a script for an animated TV series called Agent 711 based on a character I created. And I am going to represent Glee at the Canadian upfronts in Toronto.
What alcoholic drink best describes you this summer?
Red wine. I feel I am becoming wiser and smoother as I age.
What cut of bathing suit best describes you this summer?
Anything that covers my whole hairy body. A diving suit?
Harry Shum Jr.
Besides the tour, what have you got planned for this hiatus?
Harry Shum Jr. : Well, I just finished three funny video shorts with Wong Fu productions that just went up on YouTube this week [here, here, and here]. The LXD is opening again this year for the Glee Tour and I artistic-directed the opening act. We started shooting episodes for season three of the LXD and our hope is to get these episodes out at the end of summer. And I’m developing stuff. That’s what’s great about the road. After you do your first five or six shows, you kind of get used to it, and you have a little more time to kind of do stuff. I’m going to write on the road, and when I get back hopefully pitch a couple shows, some fun, creative stuff. And then I hope that I’ll be on season three of Glee in the fall. [Laughs.]
They better have you back! But doing all that must kind of limit your leisure time. What’s the one thing you’d really want to do this summer if you could take a break?
We’re getting great opportunities to see the world. But I’d love to travel more. Paris, Rome, Athens… I’d do a different country each week if I could.
What alcoholic drink best describes you this summer?
Passion-Green Machine-Hyper-Tonic: It’s kind of a long name, but I’m hyper when I’m on tour, I like to eat a lot of greens, I’m passionate about what I love to do, and I love tonic in my drink.
Sounds delicious. If you could pick a theme song for your summer, what would it be?
“You’ve Got the Touch.” Not the Dirk Diggler version from Boogie Nights, but the one from Transformers. That’s the song I like to walk on the stage to. So random, but so perfect.
