Pst! Have you heard? "Glee" is going to attempt to do the impossible: Keep all of their couples together in Season 3. At Comic-Con, co-creator and executive producer Brad Falchuk said, "We're not really interested in breaking anybody up this year."Two people happy about this? "Glee" stars Jenna Ushkowitz and Harry Shum Jr., whose characters Tina Cohen-Chang and Mike Chang win the award for longest lasting couple.
So what do they want to see happen in Season 3 with Chang Squared? "Just being able to explore a little more outside of just staying together and making out," Shum says. Yeah, making out with your attractive co-star must be really tough. "It's rough," Ushkowitz jokes. "It's real rough."
During the panel, Ushkowitz was in for a shock when Falchuk revealed her character is only a junior and will not be graduating with Rachel (Lea Michele), Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Finn (Cory Monteith) at the end of the season.
"I'm kind of shocked. I thought I was a senior," Ushkowitz says. "I'm really excited. It kind of changes my whole thought process of this whole hiatus being like, 'What's going to happen to me?' I think it will be really different to see everybody in a different environment and without the same group you see all the time."
Ushkowitz thought her character was a sophmore when she signed on to the show, saying, "In the pilot we thought Kurt was the only freshman and the rest of us were sophmores. So this year was junior and this would be senior, but they got away with that because Cory was technically a senior last year, so you know. It's 'Glee'!"
Shum -- who was recently bumped up to series regular -- hopes to learn more about Mike's home life in Season 3. "I hear we're going to meet the parents. I just hope to see -- because at that point, you see this kid that loves to dance but in the beginning says he's afraid to dance outside of his room -- what are his parents doing to him?," he says with a laugh. "Keeping him in a dungeon to not let him? Locking him in?"
Mike Chang's parents haven't been cast, but Shum has some casting ideas for Mr. Chang. "It just depends on which way they go, You can totally go Ken Jeong, or you can go B.D. Wong, or you can go to Daniel Dae Kim," he says. "There's just so many different like, the regular strict parents or the crazy parents. I like crazy parents. They're a lot funnier on television."
We're not going to play favorites, but we're hoping Jeong finds some time off from NBC's
"Community" to pay a little visit to Lima, Ohio this fall.
Ushkowitz and Shum also revealed which artists they're hoping to cover this season. Ushkowitz hopes New Directions tackles Billy Joel while Shum is pulling for Hall & Oates and even has the song picked out: "Rich Girl." And yes, he is willing to rock the mullet.
Though he calls himself "the weakest singer in the group" ("the least trained,"Ushkowitz interjects), Shum hopes he gets the chance to sing again. He jokes, "I hope that Mike Chang can go to singing camp instead of Asian camp."
