‘Glee’ hoofer Harry Shum Jr. talks about cast’s uncertain future
The singing and dancing dynamo that is Fox’s “Glee” may suffer a major upheaval next year if central characters Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer get axed — but the show’s rising star Harry Shum Jr. says even the cast won’t know their fates until shooting resumes this week.
“We’re pretty much in the dark,” Shum told Flash. “Sometimes I open The Daily and find out more news than I know! A lot of questions will be answered when we open our scripts.”
Though it could spell the end of his character Mike Chang, the human rubber band who dances circles around “Glee” main man Matthew Morrison, Shum says he’s in favor of the graduation plot that could oust the beloved glee club seniors played by Michele, Monteith, Colfer and supporting vixen Naya Rivera.
“I think the approach to make it happen in real time is the smarter way to go,” Shum said. “When you’re on every week, it’s pretty tricky to play with the timing.”
Once an extra nicknamed “Other Asian” by fans, Shum has enjoyed a steady rise to series regular, including a spot in “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie,” which hits theaters on Friday after a glittering, screaming fan-filled Hollywood premiere on Saturday.
The cast was all smiles despite the potential purge hinted by executive producer Ryan Murphy, who has been plagued by rumors that he’s become a monster behind the scenes.
But Shum denies that the man who promoted him is drunk on the show’s success.
“He’s always been the same, ever since I first met him. People always say different things, but he’s a sweet guy,” Shum said. “Not everyone’s going to be happy to hear certain things, but what better way to get over [it] than to sing and dance?”
Shum is hoping to stay on Murphy’s good side: He’s in the throes of vocal lessons and hoping for a major singing scene and a beefed-up story line rumored to include Mike Chang’s never-before-seen family.
“I’m hoping that will happen. I want to get to know the character more,” Shum said.
“[Mike’s] an emotional guy, but right now, he’s still mysterious.”
