Darren Criss Interview with Marie Claire UK!

Gleeks, do we have a treat in store for you! Earlier this month, Team MC sung and danced their way through the spectacular Glee Live! show, watched the DVD and bought the t-shirt. And then we decided that we really should share the experience with you, dear readers. So we caught up with our favourite Warbler Darren Criss after the show, who let us in on bagging a part in the all-singing, all-dancing hit, his favourite Glee moments, and his thoughts on the future for Kurt and Blaine...

Q: What's your favourite EVER Warblers number?
A:
'Gosh. My favourite number to perform live would have to be - and it's going to sound like a bit of a copout! - Teenage Dream. There?s a certain nostalgia attached to it - and in Glee terms it's the hallmark of what's happened to Blaine and to myself. I always get goosebumps whenever we perform that one. People play it all the time, and they're like "sorry, we're playing Teenage Dream again!,' and "I'm like no, pump it up."'

Q: How have you settled in to being part of such a huge show?
A:
'Quite often I'll step out of my body and I'll look at myself and go "you're on Glee - what the hell?!" because I watched it become so big. It's very humbling.

'Everyone's very lovely and I lucked out in every possible facet - it's a great show, a wonderful part that I believe in, and I've been given a wonderful storyline that I could have never dreamed of.

'It's been fun working on the show as the new guy, because I have this new kid wide eyed appreciation of everything and it's very exciting all the time. It's not to be taken for granted. I was unemployed before, so it's a bit of a blessing.'

Q: What went through your head when you landed the Glee part?
A:
'I thought it was a joke! I’m a composer mostly, I’ve made most of my way writing music and I have a theatre company [StarKid Productions].

'I was kind of in the middle of getting together my newest show, so when my agent called and said "you got Glee" I said "yeah right, wouldn’t that just mess everything up!". Of course it hasn’t messed everything up - Ryan Murphy’s been very acknowledging of my existing career and told me to do both in whatever capacity I can.

'Right now feel like I’ve been on two tours, because on the Glee tour I’ve been playing other shows on my nights off - mostly for the star kid thing. It’ll be a packed house of people who know me from before singing along with my songs.'

Q: What's your fondest memory of filming your first Glee season?
A:
'Um - that's a really good question. I've had a lot! It is truly a blast to shoot, I mean the show's already a success, so we don't have to worry about that aspect too much.

'Every day honestly is a true joy, and I've had so many laughs with so many of the crew and so many of the cast members. Shooting Teenage Dream was one of my first days on set, and we were all just getting to know each other, all the Warblers together made it like this really exciting thing.'

Q: Spill the beans - are you definitely signed up for the third season now?
A:
'That would be cool, but I have no idea. Who knows! As far as I'm concerned I've been invited to this really lovely party.

'I think I've gotten so damn lucky, that for me to feel entitled would be ridiculous. I don't deserve any of this. I've fallen arse backwards in to the most incredible experience I would never imagine, so whatever happens, hey man. I don't know. But as a fan I'm just as curious an anyone else, I've really no idea what's going to happen.'

Q: Let's assume we'll see you again in season 3 - where would you like Kurt and Blaine's relationship to go?
A:
'Like I said, I'm so happy to be on the show that whatever happens I'll be happy with! But I'd like to see their relationship continue.

'There are so many other characters on the show that I'm actually more excited to see, though. Blaine has had his time in the sun and I think it's time to focus on other people - there are so many other stories to be told that I'm curious in as a fan.

'If they did decide to focus on Kurt and Blaine, I think Blaine has a past that would be interesting to explore. I think he's very envious of Kurt and his father's relationship - because he doesn't have the same relationship with his father. I just hope that they can just grow together, stick together and make a solid couple.'

Q: Who would you love to see on the show? Any more famous faces?
A:
'My go to answer - and you'll be so annoyed because you'll see this everywhere - is that I am a diehard lobbiest for Chrstoper Walken. I just don't know what I have to do to get him in. He can dance - no that's an understatement - the man can boogie!

'He's one of my favourite actors and a really cool guy. He also comes from a classical theatre background and he's a very song and dance man, so to me that just screams glee. I do know that he doesn't have a cell phone or a computer, though. Maybe I'll send a carrier pigeon?!'

Q: Do you feel the responsibility of having Glee fans look up to you?
A:
'Certainly. It is responsibility. I feel that I've been given a superhero costume - I've been given this cape - and it makes me feel small. I'm not a superhero, I'm just some random dude.

'But if people believe it then it's sort of my duty to make sure I live up to it. It's very empowering. And thank god it's a cape I believe in, because I'm not lying, or being untrue to myself when I try and stand up for those ideals.'
