'Glee' cast on bad headlines, song choices, and 'getting back to what show is about'

Tired of the all the talk about Glee drama? So is the cast.
At two separate press conferences Saturday for the show’s 3-D concert movie (in theaters Aug. 12), cast members talked about their hopes that the upcoming film would put the focus back on the show and less on the fandom-rocking news from recent months about graduations and cast departures.

“I think the great thing is that this movie is going to put a lot of things into perspective for people, and they’re going to get back to what the show is really about,” said Amber Riley (Mercedes). “It’s not about gossip, it’s not about drama. It’s about these [fans] who are connected to each and every one of these characters. Our characters have literally grown up with them. We’re helping them through adolescence, high school, junior high. So I’m hoping that’s what this movie is going to do.”

Continued Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina): “You kind of stay away from it. You wait for your creators to tell you directly what’s happening, and we kind of ignore that because that’s not what the show’s about…Nothing is set in stone until you set that script.”
The cast members, who head back to work Monday, were mum on details about plot points for the new season, but Lea Michele (Rachel) teased that the songs in the “back to basics” season 3 are “a lot of songs that have not been on the charts in a while and have been hits in the past. I love doing things like that.” Added Max Adler (Dave) later, “It’s a mixture [of old and new]. I believe Ryan Murphy said he was getting some criticism for getting bigger songs. Now he is looking for songs that just fit the story that aren’t necessarily top 40. Whatever he does turns into gold so I’m just excited.”

As senior year approaches, cast member Dianna Agron (Quinn) said her hope is to see the characters involved in senior year traditions. “Senior pranks would be funny,” Heather Morris added.

Glee premieres Sept. 20.
