Glee actress Jayma Mays talks to Metro about her British husband Adam Campbell, her love for zombie films and her fear of rattlesnakes.

The Smurfs has been a huge hit in America. How do you feel about being even more recognisable?
With The Smurfs, it might be a really young audience but that’s ok with me. With Glee, it’s surprising how many different groups and ages watch the show. But when you’re growing up you think of the movies you watched then and those are the movies that still stick with me today, so I’m excited about that.

Are you bothered in the street by lots of grown-ups, too?
People come up at all times but it’s never bothered me. Maybe it doesn’t happen enough and when people come up they’re just so lovely. I haven’t had an opportunity to be upset about that yet, no one’s been rude or strange. I understand some people probably get mobbed when they go out but it has only been pleasant so far.

Your husband is a Brit. Do you find Brits more polite?
I did feel that people there are almost more polite. They try and make eye contact first and then, if the eye contact was approved, they’d come and say hello. There was a little unspoken dialogue going on before they’d come up. I still find that to be one of the strangest things. Last weekend [in LA], someone walked up, held his phone up to my face, smiled and walked away. I was like: ‘Oh, ok.’

You’re pregnant in The Smurfs but you’re not a mum yet. How did wearing a fake bump make you feel?
Great! Men opened doors and said: ‘Can I carry that for you?’ I thought about bringing my bump home to wear to the supermarket so I’d get better service.

What kind of a mum will you be eventually?
I want to be a good, responsible parent but I do love the thought of kids running around and a really joyous family. I don’t know how I’ll be. My parents were both hard-working but when we had time together they were pretty fun. I hope that’s the case for me.

What silly little thing makes you happy?
I love puzzles and stuff like that. I feel rewarded when I get the right answer.

You work with the charity Cookies For Kids’ Cancer. Is that about wanting to give something back now that you’re so successful?
Definitely. I tried to get involved with a couple of things this year because I do feel this sense of responsibility. Celebrity and stardom is such an unusual thing. I’ve never fully understood it. But if you can take part of that and use it for something good, that helps me understand it in a way that’s good for me.

What keeps you sane?
It sounds so cheesy to say but having a great life at home. If I have a dinner party and everyone on the invite list shows up, that’s a reward.

What have you learnt about yourself as you’ve got older?
That I love being around creative people and doing things that are collaborative with a lot of people.

Is there anything people would be surprised to discover about you?
I absolutely love horror films. I don’t know if it’s the pull of good and evil and the apocalypse that really intrigues me but I really love zombie films. They make me really scared but there’s something about that adrenaline rush. Maybe it’s similar to the one you get from auditions. It’s like being an adrenaline junkie in a mental capacity. I love that feeling of being so scared I think I’m going to die.

What else scares you?
Everything. I was on a run the other day and saw a rattlesnake. I was terrified. I saw a coyote first and wasn’t scared of that because I see them all the time but then I saw this snake and thought: ‘What is going on today?’ I ended my run early. I thought it was a sign there might be a mountain lion around the next corner.
