Murphy and new Glee co-executive producer Allison Adler are pitching a half-hour comedy project, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively. Though details are being tightly guarded, the pair will begin shopping it to all the networks Friday.
Fox could be a likely home for the project, considering Murphy’s relationships with the network and his first-look deal with its sibling studio 20th Century Fox Television.
The project would fit Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly’s desire to stay in business with Murphy. He told THR in September that he “would work with Ryan and his team for the rest of my career and be happy to do it -- even on the days where he wants to kill me and I want to kill him.”
Reilly also has also made expanding the network’s live-action comedies a high priority this development season.
“Since I came back to Fox, the network has kind of lost its pulse on the comedy side,” he told THR. “It's debatable how much brand association you have with a network, but historically, there has been higher brand association with Fox: 'Oh, that's a Fox unscripted show,’ or, 'that's a Fox drama.’ Fox comedy had been clear at one point, from Married ... With Children to The Bernie Mac Show to Malcolm in the Middle. [Comedy is] something we want to see more of on the schedule next year.”
Adler, whose credits include Chuck and No Ordinary Family, was one of the six new scribes brought in to the Glee writers’ room in June as the series sought to ease the burden on Murphy and co-creator Brad Falchuk as they launched FX’s American Horror Story.
She has a history in comedy, serving as a producer on Family Guy as well as a supervising producer on Just Shoot Me! as well as Still Standing.
The project comes as Murphy and Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk’s second series on the air, American Horror Story, debuted as the No. 1-ranked program on basic cable during its Wednesday premiere on FX.
The project would mark Murphy’s entry into the half-hour format; his credits also include dramedy Popular and the FX drama Nip/Tuck.
Murphy is repped by CAA; Adler is with WME.
