Glee’s Max Adler is doing his part to speak out against bullying.

The actor, who plays McKinley High’s resident bully on the Fox musical dramedy, has been named a spokesman for City Hearts: Kids Say Yes to the Arts, a nonprofit organization that brings the arts to underprivileged children.

As part of the arts program, Adler has launched “Max’s A-B-C Initiative – Anti-Bullying Through City Hearts,” a pilot program at Foster Elementary School in Compton, Calif.

As part of the effort, Adler visited the school Tuesday, where he encouraged students to get involved in the arts, be it literature, acting, dance, photography or more as an alternative to bullying their classmates.

“If kids understand from an early age that everyone in this world is equal, the thought of bullying others will not even enter their headspace,” he said.

“The arts, whether it’s music, acting, dance, playwriting or photography, helps kids realize that we all want the same things: love, laughter, great memories with family and friends and to be given a chance to succeed,” Adler added.

Founded by juvenile public defenders Bob and Sherry Jason in 1985, City Hearts is a 26-year-old Los Angeles-based nonprofit that targets kids ages 5-18 through afterschool and arts programs. The nonprofit has provided arts-related classes to more than 30,000 kids.

Said City Hearts founder and executive director Sherry Jason: “[Adler] may play a bully on TV but in reality, he cares deeply about preventing bullying … Max genuinely cares about at-risk kids and believes deeply in the power of City Hearts’ vital arts programs to improve their self-confidence and academic success as well as their desire to stay in school and develop a love of learning.

The event came the same day as the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s annual Spirit Day, in which celebrities including Conan O’Brien, Chaz Bono, Ricky Martin and Julianne Moore, among countless others, showed support for gay youth and stood up against bullying.

Adler as well as Glee co-stars Naya Rivera and Chris Colfer, among others, have all been active in speaking out against bullying.

As I've mentioned before, it is really great to see members of the Glee cast doing community service. I think it is even more important for Max, because he plays a bully on tv, to show kids the importance of treating everyone equally. Getting them involved in the arts I think is very important too. I agree that if they have something they are really interested in and invest a lot of time in, the idea of bullying shouldn't even come into play. Glee touches on the subject of bullying very often so it's a perfect subject for Max to be covering. Kids can take what they see on tv and interpret it how they want, but having Max be there with them and as a role model will do them good. Good for Max for helping out in the community!
Thanks for the post!
