"Glee" at TCAs: Grant Gustin Is Harder and Chris Colfer On...Retiring?

The Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour continues in Pasadena this week and on Sunday night Fox threw a party where the stars of their current and upcoming series made appearances to chat with the press. Of course, AfterElton was there and grabbed some one-on-one time with a cheery Chris Colfer as well as his Glee on-screen nemesis Grant Gustin. Will the villainous Sebastian continue chasing after Blaine (Darren Criss, who was not present due to his Broadway duties on How To Succeed in Business)? And who is singing what in the Michael Jackson tribute episode, currently scheduled to air on January 31st? And why is Colfer talking about retirement? You just know we asked!

First up...Chris Colfer:

AfterElton.com: What's next for Kurt and Blaine?
Chris Colfer:
We haven't been doing much yet since he's been gone. Pretty much the same. They're both in the Michael Jackson episode and they have some sweet moments but other than that we're still hanging out, we're still together.

AE: Any big songs coming up that you're excited about?
CC:
I am singing one song in the Michael Jackson episode, which I'm not sure how I feel about it since it was voted the worst song in history but I think we did it justice. [laughs]

AE: Who voted it worst song?
CC:
The world did, I believe.

AE: What's the song?
CC:
"Ben."

AE: I like that song!
CC:
You do? Oh, good!

AE: What else are you doing outside the show? I'd guess you're getting offers for your hiatus.
CC:
I've got my book, which is coming out in August and the cover art gets released just this month so I'm excited about that. A movie I shot last summer...we're going to have a trailer by the end of this month or next month and we'll get to see a little bit of it. I think I'm doing another movie this summer but I'm not sure. For me, I think I had a coming of Jesus meeting with myself. We had a two-week hiatus for winter break and I realized it was the first week of rest I'd had in three years so I'm going to try to take some time for myself this next hiatus.

AE: Are you going to make sure the breaks happen more often?
CC:
I hope so but we'll see. I'm one of those people that even with the 2 weeks off I had I was like 'I gotta do something! I need something to do." I don't think I could ever retire.

AE: We don't want you to ever retire, Chris.
CC:
Not anytime soon at least.

AE: What's the book? Is it your story?
CC:
God no. I could never write that. That would be so boring. I was approached by many, many people after I won the Golden Globe to do an autobiography and I said 'I'm 20! I'm not going to do an autobiography!' But then I asked the people, 'I really want to do a children's series. Would you be interested in that?' They said absolutely and I got a two-book deal with Little Crown. It's a fantasy series about two kids who go into the fantasy world. I'm very excited about it. The first one comes out in August.

AE: Do you have kids in your life? Relatives or...?
CC:
Not really. just the ones who talk to me in my head. I should probably take my medication.

Later in the party I found the electric-watt smile of Grant Gustin, who appeared to be enjoying the party and attention he was getting from the crowd.

AfterElton.com: Are you enjoying playing Sebastian, who some might call kind of a d**k?
Grant Gustin:
Yes, I would like to say that he is different from myself. It's a lot of fun. People ask me that on Twitter if it's fun being a villain. Darren is jealous of it. We talk about it all the time. He says 'I wish I could be a villain.' He's very different of me.

AE: We'll be seeing more of you soon on the show, right?
GG:
Hopefully. You see more of me in the Michael Jackson episode.

AE: What's happening with Sebastian? Is it the same dynamic in his going after Blaine?
GG:
The dynamic has shifted so Sebastian is not necessarily pursuing Blaine anymore… not necessarily. Not that it's over but in this next episode he's a little bit harsher and he's separating himself from the Kurt/Blaine storyline a little bit. You see him with Santana [and] you see him with other people. It's fun.

AE: But at this point he's still a Warbler?
GG:
Yes.

AE: But as Darren has shown, you can start as a Warbler and end up a regular.
GG:
Who knows? Who knows?

AE: I'm guessing you'd be open to that.
GG:
[big grin] I'm incredibly open to that idea but at the same time the Warblers are so badass. Their numbers are some of the coolest numbers. I was hanging out with a buddy last night watching some of the older Warbler stuff and it's some of the coolest stuff that's been on the show. The Warbler stuff that's about to happen in this [Michael Jackson] episode is really cool.

AE: Can you tell me what your song is on the episode?
GG:
You know, that's the only one that I have not seen leaked yet so I don't know that I'm allowed to say. But it's very...I will say it's a Jackson 5 number. The Warblers are doing a Jackson 5 number and it's a lot of fun.

AE: And you're finished shooting that, right?
GG:
We have finished all the musical numbers I'm involved in. I have one more scene to shoot for this episode.

AE: How has your life changed with so many eyeballs on Glee. Has it changed your life?
GG:
Not as drastically as you would think. I'm not recognized every time I leave my house. I was in Virginia, where I'm from, and there I am recognized but here nothing has really changed. My Twitter life has changed. [laughs] My life has pretty much remained the same and I’m hoping to keep it that way as much as possible

AE: Are you going in for more auditions?
GG:
Initially, when I first landed the role it was 'Let's see if we can get something else and I did.' I did a CSI: Miami episode and that was great. Right now I am settling back down and hoping to do more on the show.

AE: Do you want TV, Broadway...what's in your future?
GG:
Broadway was my initial goal and this has been a happy accident. I am not going to complain about it but this is not part of the chronological order of doing things so right now I’m just taking a step back, appreciating this and figuring out what's next and I have no idea. It's an episode at a time with Glee. I don’t' even know when I'm doing another episode.

AE: Who are you hearing from in terms of the fans?
GG:
First of all on Twitter you can't tell but in person it hasn't been an extreme amount of gay guys. I mean some gay guys have reached out to me and have been like 'I love your character and it's something we haven't seen before on Glee or on television so it's fun to see. I've had gay friends reach out to me so it's been really great."

Glee airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on Fox.
