Glee in Season 4: 12 Suggestions to Keep the Show Thriving Beyond Graduation

Graduation day is on the horizon for the kids of William McKinley High School, and with it comes a fantastic opportunity for Glee to reboot itself in a new and exciting way. Indeed, with Kurt, Rachel, Finn, Mike, Puck, Mercedes, Santana, Brittany, Quinn and Sam all contemplating life after high school, we decided to whip up some suggestions (both bold and entirely plausible) for potential story arcs — and a few exits — for some of our favorite characters. Check out our vision of Glee in Season 4, then hit the comments with your own ideas!

Kurt and Rachel head to NYADA, where they live in a musically rich freshman dorm filled with spontaneous sing-offs and cutthroat competition for lead roles and solos. Kurt breaks up with Blaine at the end of the summer -- if you love someone, set him free, then check out all the handsome fellas in Manhattan -- but as for Rachel...

She opts for a long-distance relationship with Finn. Her fiancé -- thank goodness, they didn't get married before graduation! -- decides to take a year off from his education and stay in Ohio to figure out what he wants to do with his life. In the interim, Finn juggles a trio of jobs -- helping Beiste as a McKinley assistant football coach, working as assistant musical director for New Directions, and spending weekends at his dad's body shop. Interestingly enough, though...

It'll be Mr. Martinez (Ricky Martin) who steps in as McKinley's glee-club advisor. Yep, the bon-bon shaking Spanish teacher will spend the season trying to get New Directions back to Nationals for a third straight year. But what about the club's former mentor?

Immediately after achieving his lifelong goal of winning Nationals, Mr. Schue ties the knot with Emma in New York City. Before they can head back to Ohio, though, Schue gets a job offer from a private school in New Hampshire so impressed by his work with New Directions, it's willing to pay him the kind of salary McKinely could never afford. Will and Emma can't refuse that kind of stability, and so they bid a bittersweet farewell to their friends -- and to the series. Not to worry, though, there will still be familiar faces at McKinley...

Mike Chang will earn tuition money running "Booty Camp" for Mr. Martinez. Turns out Mike deferred his dance scholarship to NYU School for the Arts for one year, choosing instead to spend freshman year at a college closer to home and have more time with his sweetheart Tina. Ms. Cohen-Chang, meanwhile, finds herself front-and-center in the new New Directions lineup -- along with...

Puck?! Yes, New Directions' resident bad boy is forced to repeat senior year after failing more than half of his final exams. His erstwhile baby mama, however, takes her life in a completely different direction...

Yes, Quinn recovers from the injuries she sustained in her car accident, learns to walk again, heads directly to her freshman year at Yale -- and out of the Glee universe. (Hey, the show can't possibly follow the entire senior class into their post-McKinley lives!) Quinn won't be the only one who's headed east, either.

Mercedes, Santana, and Brittany head to NYC -- where they form a girl group and try to get a record deal while working as waitresses at a greasy spoon. Thankfully, their pad isn't too far from the NYADA campus, which means they'll get plenty of opportunities to bump into their old pals Kurt and Rachel. While Santana and Brittany continue their romantic relationship, Mercedes will return to being a single lady.

That's partially because Sam decides big city life is not for him. He stays in Lima, OH, gets an apartment with Finn, enrolls in the local community college by day, and supports himself working as an exotic dancer by night. Still, while Samcedes goes kaput, another unexpected romance emerges...

Heartbroken from his split with Kurt, Blaine finds himself playing McKinley High tour guide to Sebastian, who's forced to transfer from Dalton Academy after his family runs into money problems. While his former enemy remains as arch and scheming as ever, Blaine discovers a case of opposites attract -- even as they compete for the same New Directions solos. And making things even more complicated...

There's a fourth man getting his share of big numbers: With Finn, Rachel, and the Troubletones trio out of the picture, Artie emerges as the heart and soul of glee club, and continues to pursue his dream girl Sugar (single again after exchange student Rory heads back home to Ireland).

Speaking of Sugar, the resident rich girl finally concedes she can't actually sing -- and ends up becoming a major building block in Sue's plan to rebuild the Cheerios into a nationally recognized troupe. Without Schue to kick around, Coach Beiste becomes the object of Sue's inexplicable wrath -- and the unlikely duo embark on a Roadrunner-Wile E. Coyote pas de deux over the course of the season.
