Lea Michele becoming the new face of L’Oreal might have the entertainment and style industries buzzing, but her choice to sign with the cosmetic giant is also causing a stir among animal-rights groups.
Michele is known for her starring role on the TV series Glee, but she is also known as an animal rights activist. A long-time vegetarian, she cites her love for animals as the reason she is involved with animals rights and chooses a meatless diet.
The outrage stems from L’Oreal’s decision to resume animal testing to sell their cosmetics in China. The law there requires cosmetics to be tested on animals.
As the Daily Mail reported, other companies are opting out of the Chinese cosmetics market. Paul Mitchell CEO and Co-founder John Paul DeJoria said of the company’s decision, “Since Paul Mitchell was founded in 1980, we have been cruelty-free. We do not conduct or condone animal testing on our products, and we will not attempt to market our products in China until alternatives to animal testing methods have been accepted by the government.”
Although Michele might not be aware of L’Oreal’s animal testing in China, other entertainers are voicing protest against animal testing.
British actor and comedian Ricky Gervais recently spoke out against the cosmetics companies he believes are selling out: “Ethical principles shouldn’t be up for sale. You cannot put a price on morality and compassion.” He applauded global cosmetics company Urban Decay for their non-compliance with the Chinese law and noted their continued success: “You don’t have to sell your soul in order to be a globally successful cosmetics brand.”
Humane Society International reports that China might be reconsidering its stance on animal testing in light of a proposed ban in Europe of animal-tested products, due to start in 2013.
