'Glee' Emmy nominee reflects on 'New York' episode

Costume designer Lou A. Eyrich was just this side of gobsmacked upon discovering she and supervisor Marisa Aboitiz had been nominated for a Creative Arts Emmy Award for their work on the "Glee" episode, "New York."

"I just didn't expect it," Eyrich explained. "But I'm thrilled, obviously. But there is so much good TV on this season, so many great shows. And all the great period shows."

In fact, this year, all "Glee" competes against is period pieces: "Boardwalk Empire," ''The Borgias," ''Game of Thrones" and "Mad Men."

"So, it was, I felt like the little engine that could," Eyrich said, "even though 'Glee' is not a little engine, obviously anymore."

Eyrich continued discussing her work on "New York" during a recent interview at an Academy-hosted reception celebrating costume nominees, held at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in downtown Los Angeles.

"We threw it together," she confessed. "We landed in New York on a Saturday night, shopped all day Sunday, threw them in the clothes. Some of it was done in L.A., but, literally, we just had to throw them out there in Central Park and on the steps in Times Square. And it just was so fun. And we just thought that, 'Let's just submit this one.'"

From the episode's first frame, a 360-degree pan of Times Square to actress Lea Michele in an eye-popping multi-colored mini coat, it was clear this wouldn't be just any old "Glee" episode, at least in terms of design — starting with That Cat. It's something Marlo Thomas easily could have worn on the '60s sitcom favorite "That Girl."

"We were told that they wanted it to be kind of a little nod to 'Breakfast at Tiffany's,' and all the iconic New York places where we were going to shoot," Eyrich said. "And they wanted it a little romantic and so with a little bit of '50s, '60s flair. So we just fanned out and shopped and that just magically worked. But then we didn't want it to look too vintage. So we added it with fun tights and platforms and a little beret."

In fact, two of the characters, Kurt (played by Emmy nominee Chris Colfer) and Rachel (Michele) actually do have breakfast at Tiffany's in the episode. "And then they go perform on the stage of 'Wicked.' And just trying to come up with something cute and youthful, but that they would dress up for and again, threw it together in a day," Eyrich noted, with a laugh.

This marks Eyrich's second nomination for "Glee" ("The Tudors" took the prize last year), but she's certainly no newcomer, with credits dating back to Prince's 1990 feature "Graffiti Bridge." She's worked regularly with "Glee" producer Ryan Murphy for more than a decade, with shared credits including "Popular" (1999-2001) and "Nip/Tuck" (2003-2010).

But "Glee" is something even more special to Eyrich. "For me, personally, just seeing the effect that it has on people — I've never worked on a show that has brought people so much joy," she said. "And then also one with more controversial topics that it brings it to the light. Then again, I think that Ryan Murphy is always good at making those social images, social issues come to light in a beautiful way."

The 2011 Creative Arts Emmy Awards is set for Saturday in Los Angeles.

2x22 "New York": Recaps and reviews

Glee‘s Season 2 finale was kind of like a New York City sidewalk: Fast-moving and crowded, with equal bursts of excitement, irritation, surprise, and confusion. Absent from the roll call: Sue Sylvester (reportedly recovering from last week’s sudden case of Characterus Reversalus); April Rhodes (on an extended dinner break from rehearsing herCrossrhodes musical); and Dave Karofsky (whose fascinating struggle with sexual orientation will have to wait till September…Unless Fox wants to create some kind of darkly awesome online summer series starring Max Adler?)

If you somehow got on the wrong Subway train and missed the action, please allow me to catch you up — in the classic “here’s what you missed on Glee” format: The New Directions kids arrived in New York City for Nationals, not having written, let alone rehearsed, two of their numbers. (Um, and these kids thought they were going to win it all?) Mr. Schue took off to the theater where pal April was mounting the musical Crossrhodes, while the glee club disobeyed orders to stay in the rooms to seek songwriting inspiration in the big city. Finn took Rachel on a “totally professional” work date that included dinner at Sardi’s (and a chance encounter with Patti LuPone) but Rachel rejected Finn’s advances in an effort to stay focused on the competition — and her dreams of stardom. Kurt and Rachel snuck onto Broadway’s Wicked stage off-hours and discussed their Manhattan dreams, while Quinn went momentarily ballistic about losing Finn — until Santana and Brittany got her a magical, healing haircut. The kids found out from Dustin Goolsby that Schue was planning to stay in New York to join Crossrhodes, but their show-choir adviser had already decided to pull the plug on his dreams of the Great White Way and focus on New Directions. (Crisis conveniently averted.) At Nationals, Rachel bumped into a demoralized Sunshine Corazon, and decided to “make something right” by building the self-esteem of her Vocal Adrenaline rival. New Directions then took the stage for its two numbers, Rachel rejected Finn backstage, but then the erstwhile lovebirds threw a massive, suck-all-the-air-from-the-room kiss into their choreography, and New Directions missed a Top 10 placing (and a second day of competition) by just two slots. When the kids returned to Ohio, Blaine dropped the L-word on Kurt (and it got returned!), Rachel and Finn revived their relationship, and Mercedes and Sam engaged in some top-secret handholding. Schue debuted a tiny trophy, even Quinn looked happy, and that’s what you missed onGlee.
Now, before we get on to letter grades for the week’s musical numbers, I’ve got to dish the three best and three worst non-musical moments from “New York.”

BEST
1) Quinn misinterpreting Santana’s suggestion that she knew what she could do to improve her mood, and politely beginning her rebuff with, “I’m flattered, Santana, but…”

2) Blaine’s spontaneous, casual “I love you” in response to Kurt’s optimistic attitude about New Directions’ performance at Nationals (and Kurt saying it back!).

'Glee' season finale: Spreading the love around 'New York'

"Being in New York is like falling in love over and over again." -- Rachel Berry

Series creator Ryan Murphy may have spent two years getting New Directions -- and us -- to Nationals with a focus (especially in season two, as we wrote earlier) on music over story -- on singles, if you will, instead of a concept album. But that all changed Tuesday (May 24) with "Glee's" second season finale.

Murphy brought the story-telling back strong and, to quote Lenny Kravitz, totally let love rule. The show was literally awash in the four letter word.

Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) -- who gives up his Broadway dream for his kids -- loves the Glee-sters. Rachel (Lea Michele) loves Broadway. Finn (Cory Monteith) loves Rachel. And, goshdarnit, she loves him back. Why not? She won't have to choose between him and a Broadway career for a year -- and hey, didn't Patti Lupone herself tell her to hang on to him?

Blaine (Darren Criss) loves Kurt (Chris Colfer). Kurt loves him back. Brittany (Heather Morris) loves Santana (Naya Rivera) and (you get the idea), she loves Brittany back. Not to mention Brittany's gushy bit about loving the Glee Club like a family. And we loved Sunshine Corazon's (Charice) "As Long as You're There."

And although the "L" word wasn't uttered by either of them, we're going to go ahead and assume that new couple Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Sam (Chord Overstreet) have warmish feelings for each other, too.

What was missing from the finale? Well, we didn't get any declarations of love from Mr. Schuester for Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) or vice versa. Still, his return to McKinley High clearly leaves the door open.

And after last week, it would've been nice to get even a little of the old irascible Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) back after last week's tearjerker, but she only appeared in a public service message during a commercial break.

But we can sum up our feelings about the finale with three words: We loved it.

More than 'Glee' in Charice's future

SPOILER ALERT IF you haven't seen SEASON FINALE!

The adorable and mighty-voiced Charice returns to Glee for the hit series' season finale tonight (9 p.m. ET, Fox).

The 19-year-old singer/actress will introduce a new song, As Long As You're There (available on iTunes), and her character, Filipino exchange student Sunshine Corazon, will have a confrontation with Lea Michele's Rachel Berry.

"It's going to be a great episode," says Charice. "Everyone knows that Rachel and Sunshine are rivals, that Rachel sent her to a crack house. But they're going to talk about that, and Rachel's going to be sorry and they're going to create a friendship. So I won't just be performing (the song); there's a dramatic scene, which I'm really excited about."

Charice is in fact shooting a movie in Boston right now, Here Comes The Boom, starring Kevin James and Salma Hayek.

"Henry Winkler plays a music teacher, and Kevin James is another high school teacher who sidelines as a martial arts fighter to save the music program. I play a student. She's a little like Sunshine; she's a brainiac and her father wants her to go home to the Philippines to work in a restaurant."

A native Filipino herself, Charice has had a lot of opportunity to travel since her self-titled debut album entered the Billboard 200 chart at No. 8 last year, spawning the No. 1 dance single Pyramid. She's already at work on a follow-up, tentatively scheduled for release in early 2012.

"I've been working with a lot of great people, Top 40 hitmakers," she says, including Bruno Mars, who wrote the single Before It Explodes for Charice. Another single, Louder, was unveiled last week, and is expected to be featured on the upcoming album.

Charice expects that her sophomore effort "will have more dance (music), because I love to dance. Of course, there will be love songs, and songs about heartbreak. I love singing those, because I want all people to be able to relate to the songs."
The singer has not yet experienced that kind of heartbreak herself. "I'm not ready right now" for a romantic relationship, she admits. "I'm just enjoying what I'm doing." That includes chatting with friends online, visiting the Apple Store and listening to a wide range of music, from Frank Sinatra to Chris Brown, Trey Songz and Beyoncé.

Charice's own supple, multi-octave voice has garnered comparisons to other icons such as Whitney Houston and Celine Dion.
"That's a really big compliment, but with it comes responsibility," Charice says. "It means that every time I go out and perform, I have to try to show people that I deserve that honor."

'Glee': Do we want more original songs next season?

Tuesday night is the finale of Glee, friends, and once again we will be treated to a helping of original songs. But after taking a listen to the previews, I’m on the fence now more than ever about the idea to feature original songs on Glee.

“Pretending” (a Finchel duet) is sweet enough. You rarely can go wrong pairing those two together for a song — although I could do without the Lamaze breathing in the chorus. “Light Up the World,” meanwhile, takes more than a few ingredients from the Katy Perry recipe for fluffy pop hits. (That’s a good or bad thing depending on what you think of Katy Perry.) Earlier this season, the tunes in “Original Song” struck a similar chord with me. “Get It Right” was sweet, “Loser Like Me” was musical canned food.

In sum, the original songs thus far have ranged from good to meh (in my book).
I have no doubt the songs made some sort of mark on iTunes. (At this point I’m pretty sure the cast of Glee could put out a three-minute recording of various noises they can make with their bodies, and it would at least chart in the Top 20.) But, creatively, do we want more original songs next season after what they’ve delivered so far?

Like I said, I’m on the fence. Perhaps my expectations were too high; perhaps they still are. I’d be willing to revisit the idea next season — but this time, I’d like to be wowed. Moved. Simultaneously bawling and dancing with emotion.

I’d really like to know if LT is climbing the list of most used cat names as fast as I predict. I hope so — because that would be brilliant. Anyway, let’s talk Nationals. If you believe executive producer Brad Falchuk, it’s going to be simultaneously brilliant and chaotic. “It’s Nationals, so it’s actually a much bigger…it’s teams from all over the country so it’s a much bigger pool. These are these kids from a little place in Ohio, like the Bad News Bears. The whole idea is that no matter how big Regionals has been or Sectionals has been, this is a totally different world and the scope is much bigger and the pressure is much higher and are they prepared for it?” he reveals. “Can they overcome their internal squabbles to come together and take this?” I believe they can…as long as they stop killing people and making us all do the ugly cry.

I can’t spoil the ending!!! And neither will Lea Michele: “We get to go to a lovely dinner and we walk to through Central Park together,” she says. “You’ll have to see how it ends.”

It will definitely be an extended leave. But whether it’s permanent remains to be seen since this team has been known to change its mind very quickly. But I’m told that Jessalyn Gilsig will be quite busy in the summer anyhow. She soon begins production on a movie in which she’ll star and produce called, Somewhere Slow. That already sounds like more than they’ve given Terri to do all season!
