Will Glee's New Christian Character Be Nothing But a Stereotype?

Ryan Murphy Headshot

When Ryan Murphy announced that he was adding a conservative Christian character to Glee next season, many thought it would be a good opportunity for the nominally liberal-leaning show to let other voices be heard. Or at least that was the idea.

Not so, though, according to USA Today's Faith and Reason blog: "Murphy equates adding a 'Christian character' with appeasing the 'right wing' — which must be a surprise to Christians of many denominations out there. The assumption in his quote is that none of the current characters are Catholic or Methodist or Baptist or other expressions of Christian life, because, like many teens and their parents, they don't display their faith in public. So, evidently, what Murphy really meant to say they're adding a conservative evangelical teen who will stand up for her own values in public and push back on the other values in play here by 'refusing to accept one character's homosexuality and the glee club's sexually suggestive dance numbers,' says Glee fan Laura Leonard over at
Her.Meneutics, the women's blog at Christianity Today."

OK, that's a mouthful, but the point is made: Does Glee adding a Christian character miss the point of what Christianity is all about?
