'Glee' Super Bowl episode is 'enormous undertaking'

Can't wait for the Super Bowl-sized Glee episode?

Here are some spoiler details, picked up by USA TODAY's Andrea Mandell.

"It's a football-themed show," says Brad Ellis, a musical director on Glee (who happens to quietly sit at the grand piano in every episode dressed in black). "It's 500 extras," with cameos by "the USC marching band – the Trojan marching band. It's an enormous undertaking."

We told you back in November there will be a Thriller mash-up, and Ellis says dancing will be key. "Lots of dancers doing something very fun to watch them do, doing something really specific. People that you don't expect to dance will dance."

The big, costly episode comes with a lot of pressure – and a few stumbles, with three of the show's actors out sick (a bedridden Dianna Agron recently tweeted she "should have gotten a flu shot"). Ellis says actors out of commission were just one of the problems. "The truth is, that's a huge, big expense and a huge, big, taxing problem for all of us. It wasn't just that. We also had fog roll in the day before just as we were about to begin filming."

With all the Golden Globe nominations for the show -- Morrison, Jane Lynch, Lea Michele and Chris Colfer, -- Ellis remembers the first time they walked into casting – especially Chris.

"Chris Colfer walked in a fully realized character that hadn't even been written," says Ellis. "There was no character for him. The script was complete without Kurt Hummel. And just watching Chris sing for us – Ryan got this sort of dark look on his face, and while Chris was out of the room he started rewriting the whole show with his two writing partners Brad and Ian. He knew this is what was missing in our show."

Ellis says Colfer drove himself up from the small town of Clovis, Calif., for a shot at the part, and today, "he's becoming a different degree of star," he says. "There's an amazing depth to his presence. He's going to be someone to watch for the next four decades."
