'Glee' Super Bowl ratings are in! Biggest scripted TV telecast in three years, but...

Did Glee score a ratings touchdown after the big game?
Depends how you look at the numbers.

Despite plenty of promotion and that sports-fan-friendly opening performance to “California Gurls,” Glee was down 31 percent from Undercover Boss, which CBS premiered after last year’s game.

Glee was seen by 26.8 million viewers and had an 11.1 adults 18-49 rating. This ranks as the highest-rated Glee episode ever (which you probably figured) and is the top-rated scripted telecast of any TV show in three years (which is rather great). It’s about double the number of the show’s Madonna episode, for instance. Though Glee just barely edged out the previous scripted show to follow the Super Bowl, NBC’s The Office, two years ago. While Super Bowl viewership has been going up to record highs in recent years (see here for the ratings results for last night’s big game), the number of people who stick around afterward has been trending more-or-less down. (Broadcast ratings in general have been declining due to competition from cable). Post-game ratings peaked in 1996 for an episode of NBC’s Friends that drew a stunning 52.9 million, then had its second largest number in modern history in 2001 for the second season premiere of CBS’ Survivor. Fox had the lowest retention in 2005 with an episode of American Dad. Last year, CBS scored a surprisingly strong number for the series premiere of Undercover Boss with 38.7 million. "Glee" Super Bowl episode more than doubles audience

(Reuters) - Musical comedy "Glee" more than doubled its TV audience on Sunday, attracting 26.8 million viewers for a special episode broadcast after the Super Bowl, ratings figures showed on Monday.

Broadcaster Fox television said the football-themed episode of the show about misfit high school students in a choir was the highest-rated scripted series on any U.S. network since 2008.

"Glee", featuring a mash-up of Michael Jackson's iconic song "Thriller", was shown immediately after the Green Bay Packers powered to a 31-25 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League championship.

According to early ratings data, Sunday's Super Bowl is poised to set a record in terms of TV audiences of more than 106 million viewers when final figures are released later on Monday.

Emmy-award winning "Glee" and its popular cover versions of hit pop, hip-hop and Broadway songs, saw its audience leap from an average 11.6 million Americans to 26.8 million on Sunday, Fox said.

Super Bowl XLV Poised to Break Viewing Records, Ties 1987 With Highest Overnight Ratings Ever

While total viewers and demos can’t be predicted from the overnight metered market numbers, so far, so good for Fox, at least as far as the Super Bowl XLV which scored a 47.9/71 household rating share, bettering last year’s 46.4/68.

‘Glee’ was tracking more than 25% lower in the metered market’s than last year’s ‘Undercover Boss.’ (16.5/28 vs. 22.5/36), but that’s in numbers from 10:3o-11:30p (‘Glee’ ran from about 10:39-11:44p).

SB XLV Ties ’87 with Highest Overnight Rating Ever; +3% Over 2010

Super Bowl XLV earned a 47.9/71 metered market rating/share last night on FOX, tying it with Super Bowl XXI in 1987 as the highest-rated ever in the metered markets. FOX’s 47.9/71 is +3% better than the 46.4/68 posted a year ago. National ratings and audience figures are expected this afternoon. The 71 share matches the highest for a Super Bowl since 1982, an significantly high share in the current era of fragmented television viewing.

FOX’s Super Bowl XLV PRE-GAME SHOW averaged a 12.2/24, a +13% gain over last year’s 10.8/21 and the best overnight rating for a Super Bowl pre-game show in eight years. As is typical for a Super Bowl pre-game, ratings rose dramatically throughout the day. The show opened at a 4.5/10 from 2:00-2:30, then grew to a 6.4/13 by 3:00, a 8.5/17 at 4:00, a 13.9/26 at 5:00 and finally a 33.7/56 from 6:00-6:30pm.

Interview with Dianna Agron on 'I Am Number Four'

Dianna Agron stars as Sarah, a pretty high school student who quit being a cheerleader, loves photography, and has to deal with a possessive ex-boyfriend on a daily basis, in DreamWorks Pictures' sci-fi action film, I Am Number Four. Best known for playing cheerleader/glee club member 'Quinn' on the hit TV series Glee, Agron didn't have to sing her way through I Am Number Four but instead gets to fall for a hunky alien (played by Alex Pettyfer) and show off a different side by handling some impressive action scenes.
At the LA press day for the PG-13 drama, Agron talked about working opposite alien creatures that - of course - weren't there, working with Alex Pettyfer, and her hopes for a sequel to I Am Number Four. She also gave us the scoop on what audiences can expect from the Super Bowl episode of Glee which features the cast performing to Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

Gleeks, I honestly have zero idea who is playing in the Super Bowl this Sunday (Wikipedia tells me it’s the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers), but I’m hella certain that I will be tuning in for the post-game episode of Glee. But this super-sized episode could even attract non-Gleek eyes based on today’s big premiere: EW can EXCLUSIVELY reveal the opening Cheerios dance number set to Katy Perry’s “California Gurls.” It’s a veritable boob-a-palooza — with more bikinis than an episode of Jersey Shore — produced to keep eyes glued to the screen even after the big football game is done. “I think our opening number is going to retain a lot of male viewers,” says co-creator/executive producer Ian Brennan. The Glee team knew that they would need to lure in the football audience and adjusted the episode to reflect those potential new viewers. “We put stuff in there understanding that there are a lot of dudes who watch the Super Bowl,” says co-creator/executive producer Brad Falchuk. “It was making sure that the dudes who refuse to watch Glee are like ‘Wait a second!’” Based on the clip below, I think they succeeded.

Matthew Morrison has revealed new details about “Glee’s” upcoming underwear episode.

“We did this thing where, one of the characters is singing for the first time… and in order to get over their nerves, they have to see people in their underwear to make them feel better, more confident, about… singing,” Matthew told Access Hollywood as he joined some of his cast members and show creator Ryan Murphy, to shoot an upcoming cover for The Hollywood Reporter.

Last week, TV Line’s Michael Ausiello reported that the McKinley High gang were set to strip down to their skivvies in the episode as newcomer Lauren, played by Ashley Fink, sings for the first time on the show.

Beyond donning underwear, Matthew told Access, he expects “Glee” to continue to push boundaries.

“I think this show is gonna be more racier, I think the writers on our show constantly try to push the boundaries. Sometimes I read the script, I’m like, ‘How are we gonna get away with this being an 8 o’clock show on a Tuesday night?’ But I think TV’s a different medium than it used to be.”

Beyond Lauren’s first vocal performance, plenty of more developments are in the works for series, including the much talked about potential Jennifer Lopez cameo. According to Matthew, he’d like the newest “American Idol” judge to visit his set with a net on her noggin.

“I think she’s awesome. I’ve actually talked to her before about it,” Matthew told Access. “At one point we were talking about her being a lunch lady… in a hairnet, and stuff… kind of, ‘deglamorize Jennifer Lopez.’”

In related “Glee” news, the show returns after the Super Bowl on FOX on February 6 and the episode is going to be a “Thriller” – quite literally. While many fans know that the cast shot a song and dance number on the football field to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” Entertainment Weekly revealed this week that the number they groove to is actually a mash-up of the King of Pop’s classic and “Heads Will Roll” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

“This is up there with the ‘Rocky Horror,’ Madonna and Britney episodes because there’s so much production going into it,” Corey Monteith told the mag of the big production.

According to EW, the episode opens with a big dance number featuring The Cheerios, shaking their bits to Katy Perry’s “California Gurls.”

“It’s BMXers and girls, and not only are they shooting fire out of their boobs, but there’s a fire whip,” Heather Morris, who plays Cheerio Brittany, told the mag.

As for the storyline, the episode is reportedly set to hinge around the troubles caused by Max Adler’s closeted football player character Dave Karofsky and Chris Colfer’s Kurt Hummel, prompting Coach Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) and Matthew’s Mr. Schuester, to take action.

The Cheerios too will spend more time in the fray, when Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) ramps up their routines and brings in a cannon, into which she encourages Brittany to climb.

“I put her in a human cannon,” Jane told EW of Sue’s diabolical moves. “I’m told by the principal I can’t because of insurance considerations and liability, and I destroy his office in a rage.”

I feel the same way about wasting tickets.
