The Glee Project, the working title of a reality show set to air on Oxygen in June, is coming to Fort Worth's Norris Conference Center on Saturday and Sunday to give "underdogs" a chance to compete for a multiepisode guest-starring role on the hit Fox TV series Glee.
"We're looking for that person who sings in the shower and may think they're phenomenal," says Randy Bernstein, casting producer and co-founder of Casting Duo, the agency slated to help find the talent to compete in the reality series.
In the spirit of the show, casting producers are looking for people from all walks of life to cast in The Glee Project. Aside from the assortment of legal requirements and conditions, which can be found at thegleeproject.oxygen.com and gleecasting.com, the only real stipulations are that applicants must be at least 18 and be able to convincingly play a high school teenager. Oh, and if they're selected, they have to be available and willing to travel through April for the show's production.
Applicants are required to select and sing one of 10 songs. Casting directors will listen to thousands of those 10 songs throughout the day. Bernstein says not to be afraid to change it up a little.
"If they have their own interpretation of a song, let's hear it!" he says.
Bernstein said Fort Worth was chosen because Texas is known for producing television talent. In fact, two of Glee's stars are from North Texas: Plano's Kevin McHale (who plays Artie Abrams) and Dallas' Mark Salling (Noah Puckerman).
"We've seen great talent in Dallas," he says. "That's why we're coming back to Texas."
The central location also gives the casting company a chance to see entrants who might not otherwise make it to Los Angeles or New York City.
Applicants are required to preregister at gleecasting.com and be prepared to sing at least 16 bars from one of the 10 songs. Applicants are allowed to bring an acoustic guitar. No other instrumental accompaniment or backing tracks are permitted.
