After post-Super Bowl spot, 'Glee' falls short of another big score

After its highly hyped post-Super Bowl Sunday episode that attracted a whopping 27 million Gleeks, Fox's high school musical series "Glee" made its triumphant return to its regular Tuesday time slot, where it encountered a gigantic crowd of -

What's this?

Just 11.5 million viewers?

Less than half its post-Super Bowl throng?

Oh, well - at least that's a big spike from the most recent original episode of "Glee" that aired in its regular Tuesday slot before Super Bowl Sunday!

Wait, you say it's not?

Its ratings are actually - down?

You say five of this season's previous 10 original Tuesday "Glee" episodes actually attracted bigger crowds than did this past Tuesday's episode?

And seven of the 10 episodes did better among the show's target 18-to-34-year-old viewers?

And five of the 10 did better among 18-to-49-year-olds who are the network's bread and butter?

Well, then, what the heck was the point of giving "Glee" the Very Best Time Slot in All of TV-dom, immediately after the Super Bowl?

Turns out, in the old days - last year - old-school CBS used that best-of-all time slots to launch a series: the reality show "Undercover Boss," in which the head of a waste-disposal company went undercover to discover that his company's middle management was botching his vision for the company and making life somewhat hellish for his employees. About 39 million people stuck around after the game and watched. That's a great show launch.

But there is another school of thought that says God gave us the post-Super Bowl time slot so that Fox could announce last May - when it was unveiling its new prime-time schedule to Madison Avenue at its "upfront" presentation - that it would air an episode of its very hottest show (read: "steep ad rate") in that Very Best Time Slot in All of TV-dom. And then network suits waited for advertisers to line up with checkbooks in hand and counted the money.

Once you start looking at it that way, scheduling a high school musical after the Super Bowl no longer sounds like scheduling on acid and starts to make sense.

The goal never was to take "Glee" to the "next level." The goal was to make as much money as possible on the night. Which also explains why Fox did not cut short its post-Super Bowl XLV blah-blah-blah so that "Glee" could start on time rather than about nine minutes late. Ad time in blah-blah-blah had been sold at a stiffish rate, too, and if you cut short the blah-blah-blah, that means there's nothing to fill the space between ad breaks.

It's not an entirely new school of thought. NBC did it in 1996, for instance, when it ran a one-hour "Friends" episode after the Super Bowl because Jerry Seinfeld, star of NBC's then-hottest show, said take a hike and "Friends" was the network's next-hottest show.

That episode of "Friends" scored NBC one of the biggest entertainment-division revenue-generating nights in broadcast history - or so we're told.

TV ratings: No Super Bowl bump for 'Glee' as CBS leads Tuesday

Fast National ratings for Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011

The Super Bowl episode of "Glee" didn't result in many more viewers for Tuesday's regular episode of "Glee," which posted numbers pretty much in line with its season average. CBS led the night overall by a wide margin as NBC's lineup dipped from last week and ABC's dramas, while up slightly, didn't pose much of a threat.

CBS drew 16.4 million viewers and a 10.0 rating/16 share in households for the night to finish way ahead of No. 2 FOX (8.6 million, 5.1/8). NBC (7.3 million, 4.6/7) came in third. ABC's 5.4 million viewers and 3.3/5 was a slight improvement over last Tuesday's average, while The CW (1.7 million, 1.1/2) was off some compared to last week.

"Glee" did carry FOX to a win among adults 18-49 for the night. The network averaged a 3.4 rating in the demographic, edging CBS' 3.3. NBC took third with a 2.6, followed by ABC at 1.5. The CW posted a 0.7.

Tuesday hour by hour:
8 p.m.
CBS: "NCIS" (20.3 million viewers, 12.1/19 households)
FOX: "Glee" (11.5 million, 6.7/10)
NBC: "The Biggest Loser" (7.9 million, 4.9/8)
ABC: "No Ordinary Family" (5.2 million, 3.1/5)
The CW: "One Tree Hill" (1.6 million, 1.1/2)

18-49 leader: "Glee" (4.5)

Behind the Glee: Silly Love Songs
Teaser

Glee-Dux: Those Silly Love Songs Wreaked Some Havoc! Can the Pieces Be Put Back Together?

Chord Overstreet, Matthew Morrison, Dianna Agron, Naya Rivera and Cory Monteith, Glee

Happy early Valentine's Day, Glee fans! As a gift to us all, we got another new Glee episode only two days after the Super Bowl spectacle. And it was all wrapped up in a giant red bow of drama, wasn't it?

Since "Silly Love Songs" was such a barrel o' relationship conundrums, let's break down the events of the episode by couples, shall we?

WHAT WE LEARNED (VIA COUPLES)

Rachel and Finn: Any hope for a Valentine's Day reconciliation was blown to candy-coated bits in that nurse's office. Finn gave Rachel all the motivation she needed to start getting over him, but not before telling her she was beautiful. All in all, a bittersweet moment for Finchel fans. Since Finn seems to think he's a god among men after winning the big football game, Rachel should just let him go on his cocky way. We're sure he'll be plummenting back down to earth real soon.

Kurt and Blaine: What a shocking turn of events! Blaine shops at the Gap? The horrors! Oh, and he also sang a love song to someone who was not Kurt in front of Kurt. Ouch. And then Blaine got shot down. Another ouch. But what might have been a step backward for love at Dalton Academy might be a spin move forward for these two, because as Blaine so helpfully pointed out: Harry and Sally ended up together in the end.

Quinn and Finn: Hey, season one. How are you? We thought you were dead and gone, but Quinn and Finn macking on each other means you're back! Did you bring Jonathan Groff? No? Then we don't want you. These two didn't work for a reason (besides the cheating, knocked up with another man's baby thing) and we don't care to see them revisited. But thanks for acknowledging the hypocritical nature of this situation while sneaking around in the auditorium. Season one, get back to our DVD shelves. Then again…

Lea Michele, Glee Michael Yarish/FOX

Rachel and Rachel: We love, love, love season one Rachel. The one who wants to be a star, and she'll do anything to get there. The one on the Stairmaster who signs her name with a gold star. That's the Rachel we (and duh, Finn) fell in love with. Finn giving her that necklace was both a sweet moment and a great reminder of who Rachel was before her lovesick ways. We even got a shot of her singing into a hairbrush! Remember those days? Welcome back, O' crazy one. Let your colors burst, all right?

Sam and Santana: We know you saw that little look between them at Breadsticks during the final scene. If you missed it because you were entranced by "Silly Love Songs," go back and check it out. It's not new information that Lips McGee and Satan Santana get their hookup on. After all, the great and powerful Ryan Murphy told us himself. Care to wager how long their union lasts?

Artie-Brittany and Mike-Tina: Why do my favorite numbers always involve Harry Shum Jr.? That's no coincidence. He always adds a little something extra for performances. If Mike staying with Tina and Artie staying with Brittany equal more numbers like that, consider us on board with these two couples. But what was with Tina's meltdown during "Funny Valentine?" Just know that our facial expressions matched Mr. Schuester's by the end of that song.

Puck and Lauren: You are a strong woman, Lauren. Puck armed with a guitar and that voice would make us crumble faster than Snooki after a drinking binge. Not only did he not woo you with his "Fat Bottomed Girls," but Santana finally got what was coming to her. A beat down, courtesy of your badassness and some lockers. Cheers, you awesome girl you.

One-Liners:

"I had a cat thrown at me in a nursing home once." —Kurt
"When I don't catch you staring at me...you're staring at her." —Quinn
"I'll just marry an NFL player. They're superreliable." —Santana
"That's my man and his legs don't work!" —Brittany
"Now I'm free to pursue my dreams without anything holding me back." —Rachel

WARNING: UPCOMING EPISODE SPOILERS below!

WHAT LIES AHEAD

Bieber Fever: Sam will don the mighty Justin Bieber hairdo and enlist the help of his boys to serenade Quinn. Translation: Sam is starting a boy band. Too late to suggest they sign "Quit Playing Games With My Heart," huh? Since photos released showed Santana and Sam holding hands, we can only assume that Sam and Quinn's time as a couple is quickly coming to an end.

Diva-Off: Single Rachel is here, and she wants to take back the school and her stardom. What better way to do that then to belt out a Broadway number with the other diva in demand, Mercedes? "Take Me or Leave Me" from Rent is about to get the Glee treatment, and we can't wait to see it. Plus, Sue will bring back her awfulness after a tough Cheerios loss and start some drama among the girls in New Directions.

A Groff Return? We don't have an exact guess on when the Groff will be back on Glee, but we do know that he planned to film episodes once his show in London finished its run. And that show ended back in the middle of January, so he could have started filming soon after that. Could it possibly be time for his return to Ohio from UCLA? Ever heard of it? It's in Los Angeles.

School's Out for the Summer: The Glee cast is hitting the road again this summer, so make sure you check out the dates and cities so you can start planning what you'll be painting on that neon yellow poster board.

A Gossip Guy? Good buddies Matthew Morrison and Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford are both campaigning for each other. As in, they might guest on each other's shows. Chace has Matt's role all figured out, and good ol' Mr. Schuester says he would "love" for his pal to be on Glee. Maybe as a rebound for Rachel? Or a new love interset for Kurt? The possibilities are endless.

"Silly Love Songs": Tidbits and opinions from various outlets of this episode

From @mattmitovich of TV Line:
  • 1/4-way through the Feb. 8 #Glee.... Gotta say, it's pretty perfect so far.
  • Quinn HAS lines and, dare I say, DA is at peak luminescence
  • 1/3-way through the Feb. 8 #Glee.... Thus far I foresee at least two fan bases exploding...
  • 2/3 through... and not a lick of Emma :-/
  • GAP scene has been, IMO, the only "meh" moment
  • Um... everybody? RT @oldnumetal can you give us a clue about who gets the last scene in this episode?
  • Plot movement. Character study. Songs that punctuate instead of dictate storyline. A *very* good #Glee on Feb. 8.
  • It's a really, really nice Quinn episode, yes :-D
  • The GAP scene was simply too, too much - which was sort of the point.

From the people over at @StarryMag:
  • Watching the episode now and it's pretty dope, who has some questions that we can answer, about halfway through it right now! #Glee
  • Apparently Santana is from 'the wrong side of the tracks," aka Lima Heights Adjacent. #Glee #SillyLoveSongs
  • Quinn fans will be happy because Lady Di gets a good spotlight this episode! #Glee #SillyLoveSongs
  • Not quite sure I understand why Darren Criss just sung this particular song because it didn't quite fit. #Glee #SillyLoveSongs
  • Puck formally meets the library in this episode. LOL #Glee #SillyLoveSongs
  • Sorry Quick fans, this episode is not one for you! #SillyLoveSongs #Glee
  • I did not get most of these song choices that they had in #SillyLoveSongs, they just seemed out of place and not appropriate. #Glee
  • In response to "SO IS SAM GOING TO BE GAY OR WHAT": Right now, no Sam is not gay, but in the future, I have no idea.
  • There are one or two cute Mercedes moments, but she's not really essential to this episode.
  • My apologies WEMMA fans, there is none in this episode, Mr. Schue makes a short appearance and that is all, no Emma.
  • There was nothing going on between Sam and Kurt, they didn't even interact in the episode, nothing to report on that end.
  • Finchel fans will be happy for some more Rachel & Finn interaction & there is a other new budding relationship that we may keep our eyes on!
  • This is a Puck, Santana, Finn, Sam, Quinn, Rachel, Kurt, and Blaine centered episode. Mercedes, Mike, Tina, Artie, and Brittany not so much.
  • Regarding Blaine's love interest: He's got beautiful blue eyes and he's an older guy but his hair is pretty awful. LOL, Kurt is not impressed by him
  • Besides learning where Santana lives, and where she likes to shop for her jewelry, we also learn Blaine and Kurt's favorite coffee drink.
  • Brittany and Santana have one quick scene together, very brief. There is a good amount of Lauren in the episode, which I really liked a lot.

From @NotYerAvgChick, who works for Starry Mag:
  • In the #SillyLittleLoveSongs episode of #Glee, the glee club will be singing the world's greatest love songs to a partner.
  • In #SillyLittleLoveSongs, Blaine wants to sing an off campus number to someone he's in love with using the Warblers help. #Glee
  • In #SillyLittleLoveSongs, Rachel is wearing black nailpolish - or at least dark - which is a noted change from her usual light. #Glee
  • Best line so far - Santana says she went to Jared! LOL #SillyLittleLoveSongs #Glee
  • According to Santana, Finn has a gassy baby look to his face at one point. #Glee #SillyLoveSongs
  • I actually think that the WIGYA circumstances do bode well for Klaine fans. #Glee
  • There are two off campus Warbler songs in #SillyLoveSongs of #Glee - both have Kurt performing in them.
  • I do think WIGYA & Fireworks aren't really appropriate songs for the time they are being sung. #SillyLoveSongs #Glee
  • #SillyLoveSongs is Klaine centric and Puck centric. #Glee
  • There is no scoop on Sam from the episode. He's not in it much.
  • There is no Quick news from #SillyLoveSongs. They don't interact at all in the episode. #Glee
  • Both members of Klaine end the episode in smiles. That's all I'll say! #Glee #SillyLoveSongs
  • Yes, there is a Kurt/Mercedes/Rachel sleepover in #SillyLoveSongs #Glee
  • #SillyLoveSongs is Karofsky free! Sorry #Glee fans!
  • Blaine does not sing SLS to Kurt. #Glee #SillyLoveSongs
  • In response to "What can you tell me about that boy Blaine is singing to in the Gap???": He has ugly hair that is described as blonde, but I don't agree LOL Also, he's older.
  • You see Kurt in PJ's and his uniform. No other outfits. Kurt still seems happy at Dalton.
  • Kurt only sings during the Warbler performances. #Glee
  • Yes, it's Klaine centric.
  • Kurt has no solos in #SillyLoveSongs. He is only performering as a Warbler. Gap guy has a name - I think Sebastian? #Glee
  • Sebastian is not an ex.

    From @jenniferarrow, for E! Online:
  • New material for your Brittana fanvids in the V-day ep. Oh yeah. #GLEE
  • Valentine's Day finds a great way to spotlight @iharryshum! #glee
  • The Brittana in the Valentine's Day ep is brief and non-sexual, good. #glee
  • More Glee Q&A's in the spoiler chat on Monday. I need to sort out my feelings about the Klaine stuff before I say more.

    From @JaredEng of JustJared:
  • SPOILER: Mr Schue says he has 1 word 4 class (after drawing heart & writing love). Brittany asks, Is it love? Totally gonna graduate now!!
  • Spoiler: Wuh oh, looks like a new romance is about to blossom by the end of the @GleeonFOX episode. . .
  • Regarding Finchel: a few scenes with them. there is a kiss involved somewhere . . .
  • Santana once again is up to revenge! Breaking up another couple . . .
  • ----------------------------
    from Tumblr:
Finn and Quinn kiss at the kissing booth. Sam knows because he pretty much egg’d Quinn to do it since he saw some flirty looks between her and Finn.

But after that they kiss more in private so they don’t get caught.

*This is legit. I talk to people who have already seen the Superbowl episode and Silly Love Songs. I will not spoil anything else so please don’t message me about it.

Glee Scoop On Sue's New Direction, Plus 9 Romance Updates!

Glee stars have been singing… like canaries, sharing bits of intel about what’s to come when the Fox hit resumes its sophomore season on Sunday, February 6, with a special aprés-Super Bowl outing.

To cite one provocative example: Jane Lynch revealed on Wednesday that in an upcoming episode, Sue Sylvester will join New Directions for a bit, partaking in a performance number set to a song by My Chemical Romance, and featuring Lea Michele and others.

Of course, the word on many a Glee fan’s lips as of late is “Bieber,” as in Justin. The luminous Dianna Agron gave TVLine the inside line on how the teen crooner figures into the Valentine’s Day-themed episode airing February 15.

    Song Spoiler For episode 2x12

Kevin/Harry sing Pretty Young Thing in the hallway at school. Not sure if Harry actually sings, maybe he dances while Kevin sings. This was filmed earlier this week.

    New Ausiello Spoilers

Question: Congrats on the new site! As a late Christmas gift, I’m going to need all the info you have on the Glee Super Bowl episode, ASAP. —Stacy
Ausiello: Would you believe me if I told you that the original draft of the post-’Supe script did not include Kurt or his crush Blaine? Well, believe it. Luckily, Ryan Murphy shoehorned the pair into the high-profile episode at the 11th hour — much to the relief of one Chris Colfer. “It definitely made me a little nervous that they were having a huge episode without my character, to be sure,” Colfer confesses. “But they did squeeze us in. We’re in it for, like, a minute, but it’s a very happy minute.” The Golden Globe nominee goes on to admit that life on the Glee set has been a little “odd” since his character left McKinley High for the far more inclusive Dalton Academy. “It feels like I’m on a different show,” he says. “It’s kind of lonely to be honest, because I don’t have Amber [Riley] there with me. It’s weird. I feel like I’m a guest star.”

Question: I can’t tell how glad I am that you are back. I am going through Glee withdrawal. Do you have any scoop for us? —Bethany
Ausiello: POTENTIAL NEW COUPLE ALERT: Rumor has it the show’s Valentine’s episode will feature a flashback to Puck (Mark Saling) and Lauren’s (Ashley Fink) infamous seven minutes in heaven. And as he previously raved, it most definitely rocked his world.

Question: Glee seems to have paired up everyone except Mercedes. Is she ever going to get a boyfriend? —M.K.M
Ausiello: Not in the near future. In fact, there’s a scene in Valentine’s episode where Mercedes gives Rachel a big speech about the advantages of being single. Apparently, while all of her peers were knee-deep in romance drama, Mercedes was focusing on herself. (Funny story: That’s what I told my friends in high school too. OK, sad story.)

Question: Will Finn and Rachel get back together in Glee‘s V-Day episode? —Amanda
Ausiello: Um, no. Finn actually has his eye on someone else. I’ve said too much!

    Twitter Rumor for episode 2x12

    @GLEEinAUS
#Glee Hints: A new warbler (played by @lukeedgemon) will fight with Kurt, someone will prepare to confess their love...

A sleepover scene will take place and one couple will fall more deeply in love and another will begin to break apart
