GLEE-Wind: 'Born This Way'

What This Season's Worst-Rated Episode Of "Glee" Means For The Show, NBC And Lady Gaga

Wow: the 90-minute, incessantly hyped Lady Gaga episode of "Glee" turned out to be a serious flop.
Not only was it beaten by the first episode of NBC's new show "The Voice," it was the lowest-rated episode of the season.
A "Glee"-Gaga collaboration seemed unbeatable until it wasn't.
And the episode's failure is an equally bad sign for both of them.
Here's what it means for Gaga: her rise to hysterical, ubiquitous star status happened with incredible speed. Now, she's plateauing -- or maybe even slipping. (If "Glee" fans won't tune in for her, who will?)
Plus, the criticism long-hurled against the singer -- that her fame comes from outfits and controversy, not musical innovation -- is finally catching up with her.
Case in point: she releases "Judas" during Easter week to roil up the Catholics. Meanwhile, the only thing anyone has to say about the actual music is "sounds like Madonna."

Failing to reel in a "Glee" audience should teach Gaga that she's got to work as hard as any other artist to keep her fans -- and the recording studio, not the person-sized-egg-factory, is where that work should take place.
Then there's "Glee" itself. We've already complained that the show is neglecting the characters that made it so lovable -- and going in circles with storylines.
Now, it's eminently clear that stunts like the 90-minute Gaga episode aren't going to keep the show afloat. Which means serious change had better be in store for season three -- change that includes some paring down.

It's fine -- wonderful, even -- to have big, glimmering moments. That's at the heart of the show's appeal. But we don't need to be showered with heavy moral messages, slapdash romances and loophole-laced stakes for a full hour.
And finally, we come to NBC. Guess what, NBC? We have nothing but good news for you. "The Voice" might very well be the ratings panacea the network needs so desperately. People chose Adam Levine over Lea Michele in droves last night -- and you don't see that every day.

Don't be surprised if Lady Gaga calls, asking to make an appearance.

Max Adler: 'Glee' has the ability to change how people think

SPOILERS ON 'BORN THIS WAY'

Tonight's "Glee" is special for a whole heap o' reasons: not only does it feature Lady GaGa's "Born This Way" and clock in at a beefy 90 minutes, but the episode (which shares a title with GaGa's song) dedicates much of that screentime to the unresolved relationship Karofsky has with New Directions, with Kurt and with himself.

I recently chatted with actor Max Adler, who has done a remarkable job of brilliantly bringing this bully to life, about the landmark episode, what it's been like playing such a polarizing person and what's next for Karofsky!

PopWrap: When you were first hired, did you have any idea of the direction Karofsky would take?
Max Adler: None! I like to put a lot of work into my characters and there wasn't a lot on the page for this one-note bully when I was hired. I tried to think about what would make him more interesting, so I played some ideas: maybe he was jealous of the glee club, maybe he was gay, maybe a million different things. When that happened for real, I was so glad they went that route because it’s an important show and an important time to do a story like this.

PW: Both Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck has said that "Glee" is an optimistic show and Karofsky wouldn't be driven to suicide or any of the other horrible ends that so many real life teens meet. Were you glad to be a part of the more positive side of life as a closeted teen?
Max: Completely. I’ve heard from a lot of fans how important this character is for them because it’s important to watch the internal struggle, the confusion and the torture one person can put themselves through being closeted. I know a lot of fans have been waiting on pins and needles to see Karofsky become ok with who he is, accept himself, and come out because I think it would be a beacon of hope for everyone else who’s struggling. If Karofsky can do it, so can you. I hope that doesn’t sound glib but people do get hope from “Glee.”

Glee-Dux: "Born This Way" Brings It Big-Time—Plus We Bring You NYC Scoop!

SPOILER ALERT!!
Holy Groff! It's like the writers over at Glee said to themselves, "Well, since the first episode back didn't really have anything exciting, we should shove all the good stuff into the episode after!" And boy, did they.

"Born This Way" was not only an extra-long episode of Glee, it was also full of revelations, flashy numbers, and scenes that covered pretty much every fan-favorite pairing. Since this was a super-sized episode, you know I had to write a super-sized Glee-Dux! Plus, I got some goods on what's going down up in New York City…

Behind the Glee: 'Born This Way'

From "Born This Way" to Oprah: How Glee's Max Adler Tackles Karofsky

SPOILER ALERT!!
Max Adler plays closeted bully Karofsky on Glee, but the actor has a very un-Karofsky-like way of blowing off steam during his downtime on set: He's brainstorming an Oprah Winfrey musical with co-star Chris Colfer.

"I told him I had just been to Vegas to see O, the show at the Bellagio," Adler tells TVGuide.com. "He said that every time he hears about O, he thinks it's some Oprah Winfrey musical. So we started joking about co-writing an Oprah musical — what songs would be in, what the themes would be. We were doing that in between these intense scenes. It's a great way to relieve all the tension and stress."

And there's plenty of tension and stress for Karofsky on Glee this season. On Tuesday's Lady Gaga-inspired "Born This Way" episode (8/7c on Fox), New Directions learns to celebrate the attributes that make them unique, but it remains to be seen if Karofsky will follow their lead. Last time he was caught lashing out at Kurt (Colfer), he had to go see Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba). On Tuesday, he returns to the principal's office to face Kurt and their respective parents once again.

"I can't really spill what happens in that scene," Adler says, wary of spoiling any major plot points. "But it felt like this United Nations meeting. You have the fathers and sons and the principal and teachers. You're aware of who commands respect and who's backing off, who's trying to do what. There's this great tension that everybody feels in this circle that adds to the final result. I felt most proud of that scene as far as the whole body of work on Glee."

Glee "Born This Way" Episode Exclusive Sneak Peek!

Glee Scoop: Klaine, Finchel, Wemma and More!

As the Twitterverse knows by now, I went to a screening yesterday of Glee's upcoming "Born This Way" episode.

It is beyond. It brought me back to the very first episode that made me gaga for the show.
So what happens during the 90-minute extravaganza? Do Kurt and Blaine breakup? What about Rachel and Finn's never-ending attraction to each other? And then there's Will and Emma…
(Warning you now, this means spoilers!)

Let's talk about Klaine first. Yes, they are still together. When Kurt (Chris Colfer) returns to McKinley, Blaine (Darren Criss) admits everyone will miss him at Dalton, but he still gets him after school and on the weekends. They both well up with tears. They hug. Sadly, there's no kissing.
Will (Matthew Morrison) gets Emma to finally confront her demons by seeing a therapist, played by Apollo 13 Oscar nominee Kathleen Quinlan. I won't say exactly what happens, but Emma is definitely on the right road to recovery. And Jayma Mays is on her way to an Emmy.

Finn (Cory Monteith) and Rachel (Lea Michele) have a great moment with each other. Yes, it's with everybody else in a classroom, but the sparks are flying. Puck (Mark Salling) is instrumental in getting Rachel to her surprise "Barbravention." No, Babs doesn't appear on the show, but Duck Sauce's dance hit, "Barbra Streisand," does. Amazing.

Quinn (Dianna Agron) thinks she's a shoo-in for prom queen, but Lauren (Ashley Fink) puts a wrench in her overzealous confidence. Can't say much more, but down and dirty nastiness does ensue.

Santana (Naya Rivera) really proves she's a major bee-yotch by resorting to blackmail to try to get her way. And it sounds like Brittany (Heather Morris) is still "bi-curious." And you're not going to believe who gets caught checking out Sam's (Chord Overstreet) butt.

There are some awesome performances, but the stand out is Colfer belting out "As If We Never Said Goodbye" from the Broadway musical Sunset Boulevard. You can hear it on YouTube, but it's amazing to watch. The lyrics are pitch-perfect for Kurt's return to McKinley. Colfer's voice is the best it's ever been.
There's plenty more. Fox is cool with what I just told you, but they want to keep certain things a secret. So I'm going to stop right now, because I really don't want to be on Glee boss Brad Falchuk's bad side.

Chris Colfer Rocks "Glee" - Spoilers on 2x18 "Born This Way"

What to expect in ‘Glee’s final six episodes

SPOILER ALERT!

The kids of McKinley High have been absent for almost a month now, but the cast and crew have been hard at work to bring Gleeks six final explosive episodes that will leave fans everywhere wanting more.

To get an idea of the upcoming action and what to expect, TV Guide Canada caught up with co-executive producer and writer Ian Brennan.

TVGuide.ca: What can Gleeks expect heading into these final six episodes?
Ian Brennan: Lord. Well, a lot more Glee! I feel like a lot of the storylines that we’ve set up — a lot of the stuff with Kurt and Blaine and Brittany and Santana, those will all wrap up. We’ll continue to develop them. Some storylines will fill out; others will carry through into the third season. There’s a lot going on — we’re realizing as we move on we just have a lot of plot line to cover

TVG: How long ago did you start mapping out Season 3?
IB: We had some things we knew we were writing towards and now we have a pretty good idea of where we’re headed and what the shape will look like. It should be really interesting, funny and unexpected.
