Glee's Jacob Artist Teases Jake's "Great Turning Point," Compares Jarley to Tarzan and Jane!

For most of his life, Glee's Jacob Artist has been hiding a big secret.

"I was always singing to myself, but I never ever performed and I never told anyone I liked to sing. So it was a definitely a new adventure going in to audition for Glee," the 20-year-old tells TVGuide.com. "Everyone's like, 'So when did you start singing?' I'm like, 'My first Glee audition.'"

Suffice it to say, the cat is definitely out of the bag. Artist, a trained competition dancer since the age of 5, is now turning heads for his impressive pipes, in addition to his fancy footwork, as Jake Puckerman, one of the glee club's newest additions and the bad boy half-brother of ex-New Directioner Puck (Mark Salling).

So how did a trained jazz, tap, hip-hop and ballet dancer end up on McKinley High's biggest stage? "When I was a senior, I got accepted into the Julliard School for Dance, but ultimately decided to move to L.A. to act so that was a fun conversation with the parents," Artist says with a laugh. "I truly have some of the greatest parents ever. They've been so supportive of me from Day 1 with anything that I've ever wanted to do so they were actually surprisingly really, really good about it."

A self-proclaimed big fan of Glee — and Jane Lynch in particular — Artist remembers feeling "massive" pressure when he went into audition for the show. But he felt he had luck on his side. "I found out the character's name was Jake, so I was like, 'OK, it's meant to be,'" he recalls.

Despite his lack of formal vocal training, Artist won the role thanks in part to his performance of The Fray's "Never Say Never" — the same song with which Jake auditioned for the glee club. Now, Artist's singing skills will be put to the test again on Thursday's episode (9/8c on Fox) when Jake must duet with fellow New Direction rookie Ryder (Blake Jenner). "All of the New Directions are making up their own superheroes, and Ryder and Jake do the exact same thing and they have to sing a song together in their superhero costumes," says Artist, whose character dresses as Mega Stud. "I will be in spandex and tights so you know it's going to be pretty hilarious."

However, the collaboration between two of glee club's newest members won't be all smiles, seeing as Ryder won the lead in the Grease musical over Jake and then kissed the object of his affection, Marley (Melissa Benoist). "He just saw Ryder kissing his girl so I think there's definitely going to be some initial tension with those two," Artist says. "All of a sudden there's another person in the mix and it's definitely shaking things up. Now it's time for Jake to step things up and fight for his girl."

Those fighting words come not so long after Marley spelled sang out her feelings for Jake earlier this season, only to see him shack up with evil Cheerio Kitty (Becca Tobin). But he's now back on the market and determined to use the glee club to win her over. "This is a girl who he is really falling for and he's not used to dealing with his feelings," he says. "Jake is totally in the glee club for the long haul."

So why is the school rebel and well-known womanizer suddenly so smitten with just one woman? Artist likens Jarley's chemistry to another famous couple in pop culture. "It's a little bit like Tarzan and Jane," he says. "He's this angry, rugged guy and she's the innocent one that brings him back down to Earth."

But just because Jake finally knows what — or should we say who — he wants, that doesn't mean courting Marley will be an easy task. "This whole episode is a rollercoaster of him dealing with his emotions. I think it's a really, really great turning point for him as well," Artist says. "You're going to see lots of different sides to him through all of these relationships, not only with Marley, but with others at McKinley. There's a lot of sweet moments for Jake in this episode."

Artist has also reached out to his cast mates behind the scenes, particularly the other newbies like Benoist and Tobin, to deal with the experience that is Glee. "Chord [Overstreet] was saying when he came on the show, he was the only new person there, so he had to go through all of it by himself," Artist says. "But with us, there's a whole little group of us so it's been really fun having that experience with them."

That experience includes adjusting to being recognized in public, and more specifically, at the Starbucks drive-thru. "I remember the employee opened the window to hand me my drink and she just froze and stared at me," he says. "I got really scared because only one or two episodes had aired so I never thought that that's what it was for. I was panicking a little bit. I was like,' Is she OK? What is going on?' She was like, 'Oh my God! Are you on Glee?!'"

However, Artist says Glee's hectic schedule has helped him deal with his newfound fame. "The great thing about Glee is that with the singing and dancing and shooting, we're constantly so busy that I barely even have time to check Twitter and call my parents back," he says. "I'm used to the crazy rehearsals so I love it and I think I thrive on it."

In addition to the song-and-dance routine, Artist is also working on his comedic skills, much like Lynch's memorable quips. "There's some funny one-liners for Jake in this episode so hopefully people will enjoy that," he says. "We'll see how my comedic delivery goes."

Question: Are Kurt/Blaine or Rachel/Finn ever, ever getting back together on Glee? (And yes, that Taylor Swift song is going to be stuck in your head till I get answers!) –Danny 

Ausiello: This time, I’m telling you (I’m telling you)…if you’re a Klaine or Finchel stan, “Dynamic Duets” probably won’t be your favorite episode of Season 4, thanks to the total absence of the show’s NYC-based characters. But that doesn’t mean you won’t find a few small clues to consider while you’re burning off that second helping of pumpkin pie this weekend. For one, Blaine finds himself staring smack in the face of temptation (aka Dalton Warbler Sebastian) — without the slightest hint of flirty banter. And secondly, Finn seems more occupied with succeeding in his new gig as New Directions mentor than in mourning his lack of communication with Rachel. (And isn’t that exactly the kind of self-actualization she was asking for back in “The Break-Up”?) 

Question: Longtime Glee fan, first-time complainer. When is New Directions’ new ingenue Marley going to show a bit of edge? She’s way too moon-eyed to be believable. –Rachel (not Berry) 

Ausiello: Kvetch and ye shall receive, Rachel! At the very end of this Thursday’s Thanksgiving-night installment, “Dynamic Duets,” Marley Rose makes a decision that’s surprisngly, almost upsettingly selfish. To be fair, Marley acts under the influence of manipulative frenemy Kitty, but don’t be surprised if it weakens one third of the love triangle she’s currently navigating. 

Question: With supercute Glee Project winner Blake Jenner on the scene as Marley’s new love interest Ryder Lynn, is Puck’s surly (but also supercute) brother Jake going to get maginalized with nasty Kitty for the rest of the season? –Tessa 

Ausiello: Not so fast, Tessa. Ryder may be sensitive and chiseled, with a head of hair that even Justin Bieber would envy, but Jake has a secret weapon of his own in the fight for Marley’s heart — the approval of Mrs. Rose (Trisha Rae Stahl). See? It pays to be nice to your high-school lunch lady!

Glee | Although EP Brad Falchuk told us he considers the Dave Karofsky storyline to be “finished,” with “no more story to tell,” Max Adler remains hopeful that his character will be revisited… at some point. Reflecting on what was possibly his final appearance, after Dave attempted suicide, Adler acknowledges “in the flash-forward scene in the hospital, they do show you that he can be happy and he’ll meet a man of his dreams and have a boy and be successful. So they do kind of tie things up in a nice way. But I’m in love with the character and as the actor, I would have always like to see more.” For example? “I would have liked to see how he deals with his parents afterwards and where he ends up going to school, if his relationship with Kurt continues…,” the actor offers. With a nod to Season 4′s Big Apple-based narrative, he adds: “Maybe Karofsky will pop up in New York! We’ll see.”

'Glee' Preview: 5 Things to Know About 'Dynamic Duets'!

Glee brings duets back into the spotlight during Thursday's episode, which features New Directions channeling their inner-superheroes during an hour that sees Finn (Cory Monteith) tested as the new head of the musical club.

During Thursday's episode, which features nods to Thanksgiving, the Dalton Academy Warblers return as McKinley's Superhero Club pushes nearly everyone to find and embrace their inner hero.

Here are five teasers from "Dynamic Duets."

1. Blaine's (Darren Criss) mystery guy surfaces (sort of). As evident in the "Grease" auditions and last week's performance, Blaine is still beating himself up over Kurt (Chris Colfer) and the student body president gets some unexpected help from his vice president. Expect a flashback.

2. Brittany's (Heather Morris) nickname for Blaine comes back to threaten his allegiance to New Directions, prompting McKinley's Superhero Club to go into overdrive. Not to be outdone, the hero-themed episode spills into Dalton Academy as one specific member makes a very Dr. Evil-style entrance.

3. For those who have been waiting patiently for the new New Directions to take hold, "Dynamic Duets" does just that as the Finn-led club finally rounds out its ranks to 12 members and takes the stage for one of the strongest group performances in recent memory. The person behind it will make Mr. Schue (Matthew Morrison) proud.

4. As the episode's title implies, expect to see some unexpected pairings that help push two very unlikely alliances forward. One will remind you of Finn and Puck (Mark Salling), the other of Rachel (Lea Michele) and Quinn (Dianna Agron) and both will warm your heart like deep fried turkey on Thanksgiving and bring a smile to your face like pecan pie with vanilla ice cream on top. How they get there, however, won't be pretty.

5. The back story for one of McKinley's best and brightest new faces will be explained -- and it will take a toll on one emerging relationship, sending another into overdrive.

'Glee' Spoilers: 8 Reasons to Watch 'Dynamic Duets' on Thanksgiving!

Thursday is Thanksgiving, but it's also the night of a new episode of Glee. So why should you wake up from your turkey-induced nap and check it out? How about because it's the best episode in a long, long time.

Yes, despite the fact that I'm a notorious Glee hater, a watched a preview of "Dynamic Duets" and was overcome with an unusual emotion: joy. I actually loved watching Glee again.

"Dynamic Duets" is all about superheroes as the New Directions prepare for Sectionals against the dastardly Warblers. It's written and directed by Ian Brennan, aka the guy who always seems to do the best and funniest Glee episodes. The only other time he wrote and directed was last season's body-swapping "Props."

Here are just eight reasons why you should definitely tune in.

The Costumes Are Amazing

Everyone in New Directions dresses up as their superhero alter egos, and the costume work is hilarious and totally Emmy-worthy.

It's All About the Newbies

The Grease episode should've been about the new kids putting on the musical, but instead it was all about the graduated seniors. But, like "The Role You Were Born to Play," this episode puts Marley, Kitty, Ryder and Jake front and center. They're all interesting characters and I'm impressed with how well the show is handling them. That's especially true for Glee Project winner Blake Jenner as Ryder. He's not just a one-note punchline (see all the Glee Project season 1 stars). Ryder is a solid character who is quickly becoming the leading man of New Directions.

Finn as Will

This is the first episode without Matthew Morrison as Mr. Schuester, and Finn does a hilarious job trying to step into Schue's shoes (and clothes). His first idea for Sectionals may be one of the most epically awful ideas ever to exist.

Kiki Is Back!

That's right, if you've missed Brittany's sassy Siri knock-off, she makes her triumphant return in this episode.

The Warblers

As a prelude to their return at Sectionals, the Warblers show up to cause chaos. While Sebastian seems to have been tamed, new captain Hunter is delightfully villainous, but not in a mean, bullying kind of way. He's more Bond villain.

Sam Rules

Inexplicably, Sam seems to be the ultimate sidekick, the guy who lifts everyone's spirits. And he's particularly good in this episode, and not just because there's a scene where he's shirtless with a jock strap over his head. Trust me, it will make sense when you see it.

Puck Is Back

Puck pops up in the episode to offer some sage advice and let us know what he's been doing in L.A. Or more importantly, what superhero-related celebrity he's been doing.

We Get to See Eli

Ever since Blaine's cheating bombshell, you've probably wondered who this Eli dude is. Well, wait no more, because he shows up in the episode. Sort of.

As you may have noticed, I said nothing about Rachel or Kurt, and that's because, once again, they are totally absent from the episode. Part of what makes this my favorite episode of Glee in the past year or two is that it has a clear focus and it's light and silly. Like I said two weeks ago with "The Role I Was Born to Play," this is the show Glee should be.

It's all about the high school kids while naturally using graduated seniors (Finn and Puck) in logical ways that don't jam completely new storylines down our throats. It makes me wish FOX agreed to do that Glee spin-off about Rachel and Kurt, because then I could not watch that show and enjoy this new one instead.

So be sure to schedule your Thanksgiving around Glee, airing at 9pm on FOX.

The breakup will certainly get weirder since Santana will be sticking around Lima for a bit, at least long enough to help out with a McKinley High production. "We're doing Grease, and that was fun. I got to participate in that, which was a nice little homecoming," Naya Rivera tells us. But she remained tight lipped on whether Santana will be interacting with Brittany during her Ohio vacay. "Right now, the breakup is still fresh. So I guess we'll see," Rivera says coyly.

Question: Could Finn’s new love interest on Glee possibly be someone we already know, like Mercedes or Tina? — Isaiah

Ausiello: I suppose anything’s possible. But according to exec producer Brad Falchuk, Finn’s post-Rachel romance won’t bloom until around midseason at the earliest. “Certainly not in the first 9 or 10 episodes,” he tells me, adding that the identity of his new admirer remains a mystery — even to him! “We don’t know who it’s going to be yet. But we’re kicking around a few ideas.” Bonus Scoop Riddle: Rachel is going to be less than thrilled when she finds out who’s subbing for Ms. July next month. Guesses? Hit the comments!

I still can't believe Santana and Brittany broke up. Is there any hope on the horizon for my favorite Glee couple? — Sarah 

NATALIE: "They are able to stay friends," Naya Rivera tells us. "The way that it was handled, even though it was really sad, everyone was on the same page with it. There isn't any bad blood." That doesn't mean that Santana won't struggle with the decision, which will make her time in Kentucky that much harder. "Santana is lost right now after the breakup, and you could sense in that episode that she wasn't quite happy," Rivera adds. Can we hope that that means that a reconciliation is forthcoming?

"Glee": A new major recurring role will be introduced in episode 407. Prepare to meet the very handsome Peter Livingston, a high school student fresh out of military school. Producers are looking for someone pretty imposing to play the part -- he's got to be over 5'11" and have "gravitas." Peter is described as "handsome, evil and dashing," and he's got to have singing and dancing skills.
